What should I do if hemorrhoids occur?

Hemorrhoids may seem like a minor disease, but once they occur they can cause serious harm and can cause people to become restless if they are not careful. After an attack of hemorrhoids, many people are reluctant to undergo surgery because they worry about possible complications. In order to avoid surgery, you should eat well, drink plenty of water, avoid squatting for long periods of time, lie down as much as possible, and avoid sitting for long periods of time.

1. Drink more water and eat more crude fiber foods. Drinking water can soften the stool in the intestines, and crude fiber foods (most vegetables, fruits, and unprocessed grains and potatoes, etc.) can promote intestinal peristalsis and help defecation.

2. Don’t squat for a long time. The posture maintained when squatting on the toilet can cause congestion of the hemorrhoidal veins, affect venous blood return, and cause or aggravate hemorrhoidal symptoms. Therefore, never read books or newspapers while using the toilet.

3. Wash your buttocks after defecation. Patients with hemorrhoids should use soft toilet paper to wipe their buttocks clean after defecation. If conditions permit, it is best to wash the buttocks with water. Anal cleaning can prevent the onset of hemorrhoids.

4. Move more and avoid sitting or standing for long periods of time. Getting up and moving around for 5 minutes every 45 minutes of sitting can effectively relieve hemorrhoid symptoms; also do not stand for long periods of time, as standing for long periods of time with heavy weight can also cause venous congestion.

5. Do not lift heavy objects. Lifting heavy objects can also increase abdominal pressure and cause hemorrhoids, so excessive strain should be avoided.

6. Do not scratch the affected area. The hemorrhoid area may sometimes itch, but do not scratch it. Scratching the hemorrhoids may cause infection and worsen the condition.

7. Control your weight and avoid overeating. Being overweight and putting too much pressure on the lower limbs can easily lead to varicose veins, which can affect venous blood return and cause or aggravate hemorrhoid symptoms. Eating too much can also increase abdominal pressure and cause hemorrhoid attacks.

8. Pregnant women should turn over more often and sleep on their left side. Pregnant women are a high-risk group for hemorrhoids. They can try to turn over every 4 to 6 hours, and it is best to sleep on the left side. This can reduce the pressure of the lower body weight on important blood vessels.

9. Lubricate the anus. Using a small amount of Vaseline or buying hemorrhoid ointment or hemorrhoid suppositories from regular channels can lubricate the anus, help with bowel movements, and provide local pain relief, alleviating discomfort to a certain extent.
