Is hydrogen peroxide toxic?

Is hydrogen peroxide toxic?

Hydrogen peroxide is often used externally to disinfect wounds. Hydrogen peroxide is also called hydrogen peroxide. Since hydrogen peroxide is a colorless, transparent liquid, it may be accidentally ingested by children at home. So is hydrogen peroxide toxic? Accidental ingestion of hydrogen peroxide may cause vomiting and difficulty breathing. Therefore, friends who have hydrogen peroxide at home need to place it in a suitable place and try not to let children get in contact with it.

Toxicology Information

Acute toxicity: LD504060mg/kg (rat percutaneous); LC502000mg/m3, 4 hours (rat inhalation) Mutagenicity: Microbial mutagenicity: Salmonella typhimurium 10μL/dish; Escherichia coli 5ppm. Sister chromatid exchange: 353 μmol/L in hamster lung. Carcinogenicity: IARC carcinogenicity review: suspected positive in animals. Hazardous properties: Explosive strong oxidant. Hydrogen peroxide itself is non-flammable, but it can react with combustible materials to release large amounts of heat and atmosphere, causing fire and explosion. Hydrogen peroxide is most stable at a pH of 3.5 to 4.5. It is easily decomposed in alkaline solutions and can also decompose when exposed to strong light, especially short-wave radiation. When heated above 100°C, it begins to decompose rapidly.

It forms explosive mixtures with many organic substances such as sugar, starch, alcohols, petroleum products, etc., and can explode under impact, heat or electric sparks. When hydrogen peroxide comes into contact with many inorganic compounds or impurities, it will decompose rapidly and cause an explosion, releasing a large amount of heat, oxygen and water vapor. Most heavy metals (such as shovel, copper, silver, lead, mercury, zinc, cobalt, nickel, chromium, manganese, etc.) and their oxides and salts are active catalysts. Dust, cigarette ash, carbon powder, rust, etc. can also accelerate decomposition. Hydrogen peroxide with a concentration exceeding 74% will produce a gas phase explosion in a closed container with an appropriate ignition source or temperature. Combustion (decomposition) products: oxygen, water.

Leakage emergency treatment

Quickly evacuate people contaminated by the leak to a safe area, isolate them, and strictly restrict entry and exit. It is recommended that emergency response personnel wear self-contained positive pressure respirators and acid- and alkali-resistant work clothes. Cut off the source of leakage as much as possible to prevent it from entering restricted spaces such as sewers and drainage ditches. Small leak: Absorb with sand, vermiculite or other inert materials. It can also be rinsed with plenty of water and the washing water diluted and put into the wastewater system. Large-scale leakage: construct dikes or dig pits to contain the leak; spray water to cool and dilute the steam, protect on-site personnel, and dilute the leaked material into non-combustible materials. Use a pump to transfer to a tank truck or special collector for recycling or dispose of at home at a waste disposal site. Waste disposal method: The waste liquid decomposes after being diluted with water, releasing oxygen. After it is fully decomposed, flush the waste liquid into the sewer.
