How to use a blood collection tourniquet

How to use a blood collection tourniquet

When many people go to the hospital for blood collection for the first time, they don’t know how to collect blood. When collecting blood, many people see that their bleeding is relatively large, so the doctor will immediately use a tourniquet on them, but those who don’t know how to use the tourniquet will not know how to use it. If it is not handled in time, it will cause various discomforts to the body, and some people will even faint at the blood. So what are the methods of using a tourniquet for blood collection?

The tourniquet hemostasis method mainly uses a rubber tube or a rubber tube tourniquet to compress the blood vessels to achieve the purpose of hemostasis. This method of hemostasis is firm and reliable, but it can only be used for massive bleeding in the limb arteries. The tourniquet should not be tied too tightly and the use time should be as short as possible. When drawing blood, if you see blood returning, you should immediately loosen the tourniquet to reduce the time of blood blockage (the person having blood drawn should also not be encouraged to clench their fists for a long time or forcefully).

1. When blood sampling is required again, if the tourniquet is applied for too long, blood should be drawn again from the opposite arm.

2. When drawing blood for lipid profiles, coagulation tests, and routine blood tests, the use of a tourniquet should be limited to less than 1 minute.

3. If the tourniquet is too tight or the time is too long (such as more than 3 minutes), it will cause blood flow blockage for too long. Due to hemolysis, platelet activation, fibrinolytic system activation and other reasons, the results of the above test items will be biased, and even induce incorrect diagnosis and treatment.

You can choose to use the tourniquet in this way when drawing blood. If you can't use it, then with our introduction above, I believe many people will not be unfamiliar with its usage when they see this tourniquet again. The use of a tourniquet when drawing blood also seems to depend on the situation. If the amount of bleeding is not large, then generally no tourniquet is used, just press it with cotton.
