Discuss what are the early symptoms of bone cancer

In orthopedic diseases, in addition to common diseases such as back and leg pain, there are also some stubborn and difficult to treat diseases, bone tumors are one of them. In particular, the prognosis of malignant bone tumors (commonly known as bone cancer) is poor. Let's learn about the early symptoms of bone cancer.

Literature reports that the natural survival period of bone cancer patients who are not treated after diagnosis is several months to one year. Among the distant metastases of malignant tumors in many organs, bone metastasis ranks first. Since bone cancer progresses slowly, it is often difficult for patients to notice it when it occurs. Therefore, most bone cancer patients seek medical treatment late, lose the opportunity for early treatment, and have a poor prognosis.

Bone tumors are divided into primary and secondary types. Primary tumors grow from bone tissue itself, and half of them are benign tumors. Secondary bone tumors refer to tumors from other tissues or organs in the body that metastasize to bones. Their incidence is 30 to 40 times that of primary malignant bone tumors, and most of them are malignant tumors. The onset age of primary bone tumors is generally low, and they often occur in adolescents with vigorous bone growth. The peak age for males is 15 to 24 years old, and for females is 5 to 14 years old. The incidence rate in males is higher than that in females, which may be related to the different genders, the early and late development of bone growth and endocrine development, and the length of time. Secondary bone tumors (referred to as bone metastasis cancer) are more common in the elderly. The most likely to metastasize to bones are breast cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer, kidney cancer, and thyroid cancer.

Early signals, don't miss them

Bone and joint pain, bone masses and movement disorders are considered to be the three main symptoms of bone tumors, especially bone cancer. However, many bone tumors do not have typical clinical symptoms in the early stage, so early detection is difficult. In order to detect bone tumors early, special attention should be paid to the following situations and further examinations should be performed: ① Pain is an important symptom of malignant bone tumors. The disease starts intermittently and then develops into continuous pain. It is more obvious at night. The pain worsens in the late stage, affecting work and rest. ② Adolescent patients feel that the limb pain is consistent with the location of swelling (or mass), which is fixed and continuous, especially at night, and gradually worsens, so they should be highly vigilant. ③ When the pain and swelling of the limbs are not caused by trauma, inflammation, or cold, they must not be taken lightly and further examinations should be performed immediately. ④ When the original benign mass on the bone suddenly increases and is accompanied by pain, it indicates that there may be a trend of malignant lesions. ⑤ When middle-aged and elderly people have unexplained limb pain, back pain, and a tendency to progressively worsen, they should be alert to the possibility of metastatic bone tumors. Hematological examinations can be performed for further diagnosis. X-rays are an indispensable diagnostic tool for bone tumors. High-quality, clear X-rays and magnetic resonance imaging are of great value. A puncture biopsy can be performed when the diagnosis is suspected. Remember not to perform an incisional biopsy, otherwise limb-saving surgery cannot be performed.

Common sites and sources of bone cancer

There are many types of bone tumors, and different tumors have different predilection sites. Generally, primary malignant bone tumors tend to occur in the long bones of the limbs; secondary bone tumors are more common in the pelvis, spine, and femur. Among female bone metastases, 70% are from breast cancer, and the remaining 30% are from kidney cancer, thyroid cancer, and other tumors. Among male bone metastases, prostate cancer and lung cancer account for 80%.

The above situation is only a general clinical rule, not an absolute one. Some primary lesions are tiny and difficult to detect, and should be specifically analyzed and diagnosed through X-ray, CT, MRI, ECT and biochemical examinations.

Since there is no way to make us face cancer easily, the best way to deal with it is prevention, such as lifestyle changes, including not smoking, preventing solar radiation, limiting alcohol intake, adopting a high-fiber, low-fat diet, and exercising, which can reduce the risk of malignant tumors. Scientists are also testing a new method called chemical prevention, which is to use vitamins and drugs for healthy high-risk groups to prevent tumors. Because some benign bone tumors, such as osteochondromas and endochondromas of long tubular bones, can evolve into malignant tumors, these benign bone tumors should be closely observed, and if there are signs of malignant transformation, radical treatment measures should be taken immediately.

Treating bone cancer: Don’t rush to seek medical treatment

The prognosis of bone cancer is closely related to the early or late treatment. Therefore, we should pay attention to the early detection of cases, early diagnosis and early treatment to improve the five-year survival rate. Do not seek medical treatment randomly or listen to folk remedies or miracle doctors. Otherwise, not only will you lose your limbs, but you will also waste precious treatment time. We should respect science. The cure rate of bone cancer cannot be 100%, and any promise of a cure is a lie.
