Millet, an annual, sturdy, clustered herb. The culm is erect, 50-120cm high and often branched. The leaf sheath is longer than the internode and smooth; the tip of the leaf tongue is densely covered with soft hairs, 1-2mm long; the leaf blade is linear, 30-60cm long, 5-10mm wide, smooth on the lower side, rough or with soft hairs on the upper side. The inflorescence spikes are 5-8 in number and finger-shaped, borne on the top of the culm, 5-10 cm long and 8-10 mm wide; the spikelets contain 5-6 florets, 7-9 mm long; the glumes are firm and papery, with acute apex; the first glumes are about 3 mm long, and the second glumes are about 4 mm long; the lemmas are triangular-ovate, with acute apex, ridged on the back, with narrow wings on the ridge margin, about 4 mm long, and with 5 veins; the palea are narrowly ovate, with 2 ridges, the rough oral scales are folded, and have 3 veins; the style is separated from the base. The fruit is a capsule, the seed is nearly spherical, yellow-brown, and has a wrinkled surface; the embryo is 1/2-3/4 the length of the seed, and the hilum is dot-shaped. Flowering and fruiting period is from May to September.
