What to do if your ear hurts due to a cold

Children's bodies are relatively fragile compared to adults. Once they catch a cold, it will cause many other complications, and these complications may even persist after the cold is cured. For example, ear pain caused by a cold is likely to be a complication of otitis media. So what should you do if ear pain is caused by a cold? Here I will introduce to you some relevant content about otitis media and its treatment methods.

The temperature is changing greatly right now, and children are most likely to catch a cold. Some careless parents think that as long as the cold is cured, everything will be fine, and they often ignore the fact that their children’s ears may also be affected and become "sick." Especially when you have a cold, if you do not pay attention to the correct method of blowing your nose, it is likely to cause acute otitis media with exudate.

Acute otitis media is one of the common complications after a child has a cold. Its main characteristics are hearing loss and fluid accumulation in the tympanic cavity. However, since the middle ear is located deep in the ear canal and is not easy to examine, and children often cannot express themselves clearly, it is often ignored.

Once the disease occurs, three symptoms generally appear: First, ear pain. The most obvious symptom of acute otitis media is mild ear pain and a feeling of blockage in the ear. The second is hearing loss. Patients with acute secretory otitis media often have a history of colds before onset. Hearing will gradually decrease afterwards, and spontaneous hearing will increase. Hearing may temporarily improve when the head position changes, such as leaning forward or toward the affected side. The third is tinnitus, which occurs intermittently, such as a "crackling" sound. When the head moves or when you yawn or blow your nose, a sound of air passing through water may be heard in the ears.

The key to treatment is to clear the middle ear effusion and improve middle ear ventilation and drainage. It is also very important to prevent otitis media. Parents should raise their awareness of the disease, prevent it early, and urge their children to strengthen physical exercise and prevent colds. If a child suffers from acute rhinitis or pharyngitis, he should be treated early and actively. He should pay attention to the correct way of blowing his nose, block one nostril and blow the other nostril. He should pay attention to diet and rest. During the illness, especially when the symptoms of nasal congestion are severe, he should try to avoid flying.
