According to Western medicine, rheumatism is a systemic disease characterized by non-infectious inflammation of joints and peri-articular tissues. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that there are four main reasons for the causes and course of disease:

1 Internal injuries of yin and yang of internal organs:

According to the theory of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the five internal organs are the heart, liver, spleen, lungs, and kidneys. The heart controls blood vessels, the liver controls tendons, the spleen controls muscles, the lungs control skin and hair, and the kidneys control bones. Rheumatic diseases are mainly caused by internal injuries of the liver, spleen and kidneys. The kidneys are the foundation of the innate constitution, storing essence, producing marrow, and representing bones in the body, making them strong. The liver is the foundation of the tendons, storing blood, producing tendons, and governing tendons, bones and joints. The spleen is the foundation of the acquired constitution, the source of qi and blood production, and controls the muscles of the limbs, the yin and yang of the human body. A balance must be maintained. If yin and yang are unbalanced, one will be excessive or insufficient, and will be invaded by evil spirits. Therefore, rheumatism is a symptom of heat and cold.

2. Six external evils:

The six evil qi refer to the excessiveness of the six normal qi: wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness and fire. The Qi among the six Qi that invades the human body and causes illness is called evil Qi. Rheumatism is caused by the invasion of evil wind, cold and dampness into the human body. If wind prevails, it is called wandering arthralgia; if cold prevails, it is called painful arthralgia; if dampness prevails, it is called fixed arthralgia. Wind, cold and dampness block the meridians and joints. If there is no circulation, there will be pain, which will cause swelling and pain in the joints.

3 Endogenous phlegm and blood stasis:

Phlegm and blood stasis are pathological products of the human body under the influence of pathogenic factors, and can also act as causes of disease in the human body. Rheumatic diseases mostly have a chronic progressive course. If the disease has lasted for a long time, the pathogenic factors will enter from the outside to the inside, from mild to severe, leading to organ dysfunction, and the result of organ dysfunction is phlegm and blood stasis. This is the fundamental reason why rheumatism is lingering and difficult to treat.

4. Disorders of Ying Qi, Wei and Blood:

Traditional Chinese medicine talks about the Nutritive Qi, Wei Blood, the Nutritive Qi and Wei running in the meridians, and the interconnection of Yin and Yang outside the meridians. Qi regulates the blood and nourishes the limbs, internal organs and meridians. The Ying and Wei Qi are on the outside, protecting the human body surface from evil spirits invading the body. If the Ying and Wei Qi are not in harmony, evil spirits can take advantage of the opportunity to enter the body. Therefore, imbalance of the Ying and Wei Qi is one of the important factors in the onset of rheumatic disease.
