Are there any signs of a rib tumor?

Physical health is very important, but diseases are very destructive to the body. Most diseases have certain signs before they manifest themselves in the body. Therefore, people can diagnose the disease based on some early signs, which is very beneficial for treating the disease. For example, are there any signs of rib tumors? Let’s take a look at the explanation below, I hope everyone can understand it.

Symptoms of rib tumors:

1. Bone island: CT shows a local area of increased bone density with clear boundaries within the rib body. Most of them are single and have clear bone lines. Their long axis is often consistent with the direction of the bone lines. Pathologically, bone islands are a localized variation of bone growth within the cancellous bone, so the rib morphology generally does not change significantly; dynamic observation of the lesions shows no obvious changes.

2. Fibrous dysplasia: a disease in which normal bone tissue is replaced by abnormally proliferating fibrous tissue. Microscopically, the main features are actively proliferating fibrous tissue and osteoid tissue. In different lesion areas or different areas of the same lesion, the corresponding CT manifestations are different due to the different proportions of the two. Therefore, ground-glass changes in the lesions are the characteristic features of the disease (fibrous tissue hyperplasia is dominant); sometimes they may present ivory-like density changes (possibly due to the dominant hyperplasia of bone-like tissue).

Diagnosis of rib tumors

1. Polyostotic bone lesions are common in fibrous dysplasia, bone metastases, and myeloma.

2. Location of lesions: The junction between the front end of the rib and the costal cartilage is mostly cartilage tumors, while the back end of the rib is mostly giant cell tumors and fibrous dysplasia.

3. Lesion range: Lesions > 200px in length are mostly fibrous dysplasia and may even extend to the entire length of the ribs.

4. Hyperinflation is mainly seen in giant cell tumor and fibrous dysplasia of bone.

Surgical treatment: For patients with benign and early malignant rib tumors, surgical treatment is the first choice. Depending on the type, extent and invasion of surrounding tissues of the tumor, common surgical methods include: rib periosteum stripping, simple rib tumor resection, rib resection, radical rib tumor resection, etc. In addition, according to the actual needs of the disease, we can use biocompatible materials (artificial ribs, artificial pleura, etc.), polypropylene materials and other advanced medical materials from home and abroad to perform chest reconstruction on patients to ensure the stability of the chest wall and prevent complications such as chest collapse.
