What is the normal white blood cell count for infants and young children?

There are many indicators for evaluating human blood. Routine blood test is the most basic test value. Routine blood test includes many things, such as white blood cells, red blood cells, platelet values, etc. In short, when you go to the hospital for a blood test, the test results will definitely include the level of white blood cells. There are many reasons that can cause the white blood cell level to increase or decrease. So under normal circumstances, what should the baby's white blood cell level be?

Normal white blood cell values for infants and young children:

The blood routine of infants is different from that of adults. They mainly look at the following aspects:

1. Red blood cell system: The main function of red blood cells is to carry oxygen. If red blood cells, hemoglobin, and hematocrit are all marked with "↓", it means that anemia is present and the tissues may show signs of hypoxia. If “↑” shows that the number of red blood cells in the body has increased, however, an increase in red blood cells is not a good thing.

2. White blood cell system: It is abnormal if the white blood cell shows “↑” or “↓” in the routine blood test. Its total number is within the "normal range". For example, the total white blood cell count of a normal newborn is (9-30) X109/L, and the average is 20 X109/L. With the increase of age, the normal value will gradually decrease. For example, for children aged 6 months to 6 years old, it is (6-15) X109/L, and the average is 10 X109/L; for children aged 7 to 12 years old, it is (4.5-13.5) X109/L, and the average is 8 X109/L. If the value is too high, there may be inflammation, which is mostly caused by bacterial infection; if the value is too low, it may be caused by viral infection or drug effects.

3. Blood system: Platelets (PL) are approximately (100-300) X109/L. If the platelet count is low, it means that the baby has problems with blood coagulation.

Normal values for children

If children have a blood test, the most important thing to look at is the following indicators:

1. Red blood cell count and hemoglobin measurement. The main function of red blood cells is to supply oxygen to the whole body and expel carbon dioxide from the body, and this function is mainly accomplished by the hemoglobin in the red blood cells. Generally speaking, both are relatively fixed.

2. White blood cell count and white blood cell differential count. Doctors use the number of white blood cells to determine whether the body is infected, and then use the classification of white blood cells to determine the type of infection and what medication to use.

3. Platelets. The main function of platelets is blood coagulation. Without them, excessive bleeding may be life-threatening.

Below is an analysis of the normal range of blood routine values for children aged 4-5 years old. Red blood cells: 4.4×1012/L, hemoglobin: 134g/L, white blood cells 8×109/L, neutrophils: 0.58N%, lymphocytes 0.34L%, platelets 250-300×109/L.
