What are the symptoms of alcohol addiction?

Alcohol is a neurotropic substance. Drinking a large amount of alcohol at one time can cause acute alcohol poisoning; long-term drinking can lead to alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence; it can also cause alcohol-related neuropsychiatric disorders, physical damage and social damage.

1) Alcohol abuse

Drinkers drink for a long time, and their average drinking volume exceeds the recognized safety limit, and has caused damage to their mental and physical health, or has caused adverse effects on their family, work, and others due to drinking. They are often complained or criticized by others because of their drinking, and various adverse consequences occur, such as being fined for driving under the influence, marital discord, affecting family responsibilities, being late for work, and missing things.

2) Alcohol dependence

A special psychological state caused by long-term and repeated drinking, manifested as a craving for alcohol and a compulsive experience of frequent need to drink. The attacks may be continuous or intermittent. When you stop drinking, you may experience physical discomfort, restlessness, or limb tremors, nausea, vomiting, sweating and other withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms disappear quickly when you resume drinking. Common clinical manifestations of alcohol dependence patients are:

1. Compulsive drinking experience Alcohol-dependent people know that they cannot stop drinking. If they stop drinking, they will experience strong and compulsive cravings for drinking and uncontrollable drinking-seeking behavior.

2. Psychological dependence is the psychological craving for alcohol. When it develops into severe physical dependence, the patient fears withdrawal symptoms and develops a strong and compulsive craving for alcohol, leading to uncontrollable alcohol-seeking behavior. At this time, the determination and vow to quit drinking are gone.

3. Physical dependence: Repeated drinking causes certain physiological and biochemical changes in the central nervous system, so that the continuous presence of alcohol in the body is required to perform normal functions. When drinking is stopped or the amount of drinking is reduced, resulting in a decrease in the alcohol concentration in the body, withdrawal syndrome occurs. Withdrawal symptoms are often anxiety, unhappiness, and depression, accompanied by nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, chills, sweating, palpitations, high blood pressure, etc. There may also be sleep disorders such as nightmares, shallow sleep, difficulty falling asleep, or tremors, convulsions, etc.
