What are the types of vestibular vertigo?

Dizziness is a common problem for modern people. Symptoms of dizziness may occur due to poor sleep, insufficient rest, and excessive physical fatigue. Most people's dizziness is caused by trauma or physical problems, but some dizziness may also be caused by pathological factors. Vestibular vertigo refers to the patient's feeling of dizziness and feeling that objects around the body are rolling and rotating without any warning. Vestibular vertigo causes physiological or pathological symptoms. Everyone should note that patients with vestibular vertigo can be divided into multiple types, generally including appearance vertigo and central area vertigo. Patients should choose appropriate methods and timely treatment according to their clinical vertigo type, because long-term and frequent vertigo will have a great impact on the body and life.

Peripheral vertigo

The word vertigo comes from Latin, meaning rotation, which can be a feeling of spinning, rolling, swaying, tipping over, floating, and bumping, etc. These sensations are true vertigo and are generally related to physiological and pathological stimulation of the vestibular system. Generally, vertigo can be divided into peripheral vertigo and central vertigo.

Refers to the damage caused by vestibular labyrinth lesions, lesions below the vestibular nucleus, including: Meniere's disease, vestibular neuritis, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, etc.

Central vertigo

Refers to vertigo caused by lesions of the vestibular system above the vestibular nucleus. Most central vertigo syndromes have specific locations but no specific causes. The causes may be vascular, autoimmune, inflammatory, tumor, poisoning or trauma.

In addition, some vestibular system diseases can affect both the vestibular periphery and the vestibular center. For example, giant acoustic neuroma, anterior inferior cerebellar artery infarction, head trauma and syndrome caused by alcohol poisoning. Other disorders may affect the vestibular nerve roots in the brainstem (partial demyelinating in multiple sclerosis, similar to vestibular neuronitis), which is the area where symptoms transition between the central and peripheral vestibular systems.

Doctor's tip: Vertigo caused by vestibular system damage is a common clinical disease that will affect the patient's quality of life, so patients with related symptoms should seek medical attention in a timely manner. It should be noted that vertigo itself is not an independent disease, and there are dozens of diseases that can cause vertigo. When patients with vertigo seek medical attention, they should not guess the cause of the disease or seek medical attention blindly. If possible, you should choose a local regular hospital for treatment, and it is recommended to go to the otolaryngology and neurology departments first. If there is a specialized clinic for vertigo, try to go there for treatment. In addition, when stating their medical history, patients should follow the doctor's instructions and strive to describe the medical history accurately and in detail so that they can receive timely and accurate treatment.
