What to do with acute tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is a common clinical disease. Most people have encountered the problem of tonsillitis. Some people also have symptoms of suppuration. Generally speaking, acute tonsillitis with suppuration may be caused by diet or cold. In this case, timely treatment and control are necessary. If the disease recurs, it may aggravate the condition. So what should we do if we have acute tonsillitis?

1. General treatment

Eat a light diet, take liquid food, drink plenty of water, enhance nutrition and keep bowel movements smooth. Avoid spicy, barbecued, greasy food, smoking and drinking. For those with high fever and dysphagia, appropriate fluid and electrolyte supplementation should be given.

2. Antibiotic treatment

For patients with mild symptoms, penicillin such as amoxicillin capsules can be given. If the condition is severe or does not improve after penicillin, second-generation cephalosporin antibiotics can be given for treatment, either oral or intravenous, depending on the severity. If local complications such as peripapillary abscess have occurred, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotics can be given intravenously and combined with metronidazole, or quinolone antibiotics can be used alone for treatment. Peripapillary abscess can be punctured or incised to drain the pus.

3. Symptomatic treatment

Physical cooling therapy can be given to patients with fever. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can be given to patients with high fever. Gargling with chlorhexidine acetate solution, compound borax solution, and 1:5000 furacillin solution all have certain analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

4. Surgical treatment

If acute attacks occur repeatedly, tonsillectomy may be considered after the inflammation is controlled.
