Is blackening of nails a sign of melanoma?

Melanoma is a malignant tumor that often occurs in any part of the skin. Is blackening of nails a sign of melanoma? Normal nails should be smooth, while nail melanoma is shiny and light red. In the dermatology clinic, some patients' nails can be seen changing color, such as whitening, blackening, redding, yellowing, greening, graying, etc. Color changes are often related to some diseases. Among them, if the color of the nails turns black (also known as melanonychia), and the area becomes darker and darker, you should be highly vigilant, because the main cause of melanonychia (mostly seen on the thumb or toe) is subungual malignant melanoma, which should be treated surgically as soon as possible.

The metastasis and spread of malignant melanoma is very common. Nail melanoma first metastasizes to the lymphatic vessels, and blood circulation spread occurs later, but once it occurs, it is easy to metastasize widely. After a few patients have extensive metastases, the skin of the whole body may turn black and gray-blue. If metastasis has occurred, the prognosis is poor. If the disease can be treated with surgery in the early stage, it can save lives. Late-stage treatment is often difficult to control the progression of the disease, so it is worth paying attention to and being vigilant.
