What are the side effects of radiotherapy for small cell lung cancer

Small cell lung cancer is a type of lung cancer with a relatively high degree of malignancy. The side effects of radiotherapy usually include radiation skin reactions, the most common of which are skin itching, skin swelling and redness, as well as radiation esophagitis and radiation pneumonia.

1. Radiation skin reaction

1. Skin itching: After being stimulated by radiation, the skin will become drier and may peel off, causing severe skin itching. Do not scratch it with your hands, otherwise it will cause skin infection.

2. Swelling and redness of the skin: The skin may become red, just like sunburn. The area receiving radiotherapy will become swollen, and some patients may feel stinging pain in the skin.

2. Radiation Esophagitis

Because the squamous epithelium of the esophagus is sensitive to radioactive substances, radiation esophagitis may occur after radiotherapy, which will cause sore throat and pain behind the sternum. In severe cases, symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, hoarseness, and difficulty breathing may occur.

3. Radiation Pneumonia

During radiotherapy, normal lung tissue is easily damaged, causing radiation pneumonia, with symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, palpitations, chest tightness, and chest pain.

Some patients may also experience skin cracking, skin bleeding, diarrhea, decreased lung capacity, etc. Patients need to adjust their diet during and after radiotherapy to ensure nutrition and avoid irritating foods. Maintain a good mood, ensure adequate sleep, avoid excessive tension, keep warm, and have regular checkups.
