Can early osteosarcoma be cured?

Can early osteosarcoma be cured?

Because osteosarcoma often recurs during the treatment process, and even worse, some people go to the hospital for treatment immediately after discovering osteosarcoma in the early stages, but the effect is not so ideal. Therefore, they have doubts about whether early osteosarcoma can be cured. So can early osteosarcoma be cured? Let me show you below.

At present, many patients' families and even primary care doctors still believe that osteosarcoma is a malignant tumor and cannot be cured. Indeed, the treatment of malignant bone tumors has always been a difficult problem in orthopedic treatment, but as long as it is discovered early and treated regularly, osteosarcoma can be completely controlled or cured.

Osteosarcoma is a malignant tumor that originates in the bone. The early symptoms of osteosarcoma are mainly pain, which may occur before the tumor appears. The pain is intermittent at first and gradually turns into continuous severe pain, especially at night. The more malignant the tumor is, the faster it grows, and the earlier and more severe the pain tends to be. Therefore, if you have unexplained bone pain or swelling and mass in the bone, you should be alert to the possibility of osteosarcoma and go to the hospital as soon as possible.

Once a patient suspects osteosarcoma, a pathological biopsy should be performed as soon as possible to confirm the diagnosis. Biopsy includes two methods: core needle puncture biopsy and surgical incision biopsy, which should be selected and performed by an experienced physician in the Department of Bone Oncology. At the same time, local X-rays and CT or MRI examinations of the tumor are also required. If necessary, angiography is performed to assess the extent of tumor involvement and whether limb-saving surgery can be performed. In addition, whole-body bone scans, chest CT, abdominal ultrasound and other examinations are required to determine whether the tumor has metastasized.

Once the pathological diagnosis is confirmed, treatment should be started as soon as possible. Osteosarcoma should be treated with a comprehensive treatment mainly based on surgery, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, etc. Surgery requires large radical resection, which greatly improves the treatment effect and patient survival rate. Before the 1970s, the treatment of osteosarcoma was mainly based on simple surgery, and patients could only have amputation or joint separation, with a 5-year survival rate of less than 25%; now a comprehensive treatment model of preoperative chemotherapy, surgery, and postoperative chemotherapy is adopted, and the patient's 5-year survival rate can reach more than 50%. Therefore, patients with osteosarcoma are reminded to pay attention to choosing the appropriate treatment method according to their actual condition, and adopt standardized comprehensive treatment under the guidance of a doctor to achieve better treatment effects.

Traditional Chinese medicine is also one of the auxiliary therapies for treating tumors. Its main purpose is to adjust the physical constitution of tumor patients and dredge the blocked meridians. Acupuncture and scraping can help dredge the meridians and collaterals, which can dredge the collaterals and replenish qi, and guide the fire downward. Western medicine can give appropriate amounts of painkillers according to different degrees of pain. Some benign lesions can also turn into osteosarcoma, so be alert to possible signs of malignant transformation. Psychological support for patients with osteosarcoma is particularly important. Family members and caregivers should help patients overcome adverse psychological reactions, prevent trauma, and prevent pathological fractures. Reexamination every 3 to 6 months is required to detect tumor recurrence or metastasis early. The completion of the operation is not the end of the treatment. Patients should follow the doctor's advice and insist on regular chemotherapy to have a good prognosis until they are cured.
