What distinguishes the RowErg

Concept2's RowErg is a flywheel rowing machine with a sliding seat and performance monitor. The standard and tall-leg versions use different seat heights; Concept2 identifies the earlier Model D as renamed RowErg in April 2021. This review covers the current RowErg family rather than the separate Dynamic RowErg. Check the leg option, monitor and included accessories on the specific listing before ordering.

The machine allows a user to generate resistance by pulling against the flywheel while the monitor reports workout data. A damper setting changes airflow and feel; it should not be treated as a simple strength level or a requirement to use the highest setting. The display can support repeatable comparisons on the machine, but this document review did not measure performance or validate any physiological estimates.

Space and storage

Concept2 recommends an assembled space of 8 by 2 feet and a use clearance of 9 by 4 feet. The standard-leg machine weighs 57 pounds; the tall-leg version weighs 68 pounds. The machine separates into two pieces for storage, but those pieces must still be handled and stored securely. Concept2 gives the standard-leg storage dimensions as 25 by 33 by 54 inches and different dimensions for tall legs. Measure the actual storage location and the path to it before buying.

Allow room for the seat to travel and for the handle and elbows during each stroke. Consider overhead clearance for storage and an even floor that does not shift under the machine. A flywheel produces air and mechanical sound, and the seat moves along a rail; the effect on a shared home or apartment depends on the room. A floor mat may protect a surface, but it cannot guarantee silence.

Fit and technique considerations

The standard and tall versions offer a meaningful choice for getting on and off the machine, not a different rowing resistance. Check the manufacturer's fit information and maximum user-weight descriptions, including their different test contexts. A prospective buyer should also consider available leg travel, foot placement and whether the low seat height suits their mobility. A more elevated seat may make access easier for some users but occupies a different storage footprint.

Start with controlled movement and learn the stroke from a qualified source: legs initiate the drive, followed by body and arms, with the sequence reversed on the return. Avoid rushing into hard intervals before learning to coordinate the slide and handle. Secure feet as instructed and keep the handle under control. The right fit and comfort are individual, and the device alone cannot determine whether a particular exercise is suitable for someone with an injury or condition.

Maintenance and ownership

Concept2 publishes manuals and schematics, a useful ownership feature when checking assembly and replacement parts. Follow the model's maintenance schedule for the chain, rail and other components; wipe sweat away and inspect the machine before use. Keep hands, children, pets and loose objects away from moving parts. When separating the machine, follow the instructions and support each section rather than letting it fall.

A 2025 CPSC notice concerns the NordicTrack RW900 model NTRW19147, not the Concept2 RowErg. It shows why a used rowing machine's exact model and safety notices matter. Check current notices for the actual unit and use any specified remedy. Availability and warranty terms vary by seller and region; the presence of a parts catalog does not guarantee every part will always be stocked.

Consider the routine around every session as well as the advertised storage option. Separating the rail and flywheel can free floor space, but repeating that task is only convenient if both pieces are manageable for the people who use it. The monitor arm also pivots; check its position and visibility before starting. For a household that expects to leave the machine assembled, the recommended use clearance is the more useful measurement. The choice of leg height affects getting on and off as well as the dimensions of stored parts.

Before you buy

  • Measure the 9 by 4 foot recommended use clearance.
  • Compare standard and tall-leg access and storage dimensions.
  • Plan chain and rail care using the owner manual.

Sources and checking your own unit

This is a public-document review, not a hands-on test. Specifications and availability can change. Confirm the exact model, included parts, instructions and current terms with the seller before ordering.

Check the model and serial or lot details against current safety notices in your jurisdiction. A search cannot certify that an individual unit has no recall; follow any applicable remedy and do not use a recalled unit until the remedy permits it.
