Principles for formulating gastric cancer treatment plans

Principles for formulating gastric cancer treatment plans

After the diagnosis of gastric cancer, the doctor will formulate a relevant treatment plan based on the principles of gastric cancer treatment after evaluating the condition. Generally speaking, the treatment of gastric cancer should follow the following 6 principles.

① Radical gastrectomy is the only possible way to cure gastric cancer. Once a patient is diagnosed with gastric cancer, if their general condition and the anatomical conditions of the local lesion permit, radical resection should be performed as soon as possible.

② When radical resection cannot be performed due to systemic or local reasons such as advanced cancer or serious complications of major organs such as the heart, lungs, and kidneys, palliative resection of the primary lesion of gastric cancer should be attempted based on the patient's specific circumstances to facilitate the next step of comprehensive treatment.

③ The formulation of a comprehensive treatment plan should take into account the patient's disease stage, the biological characteristics of the tumor, and the general condition of the patient.

④ Even if patients with advanced gastric cancer undergo radical resection surgery, they will still have a high tumor recurrence and metastasis rate due to the presence of clinical metastases. Therefore, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, traditional Chinese medicine treatment and other means should be actively assisted during surgery to improve the efficacy.

⑤ For patients with advanced gastric cancer who cannot undergo surgical resection, comprehensive treatment should also be actively carried out to improve clinical symptoms, improve quality of life, and prolong life.

⑥ The treatment plan for gastric cancer should be formulated according to the principle of individualization, based on the characteristics of the local lesions and the overall condition of the patient, and various treatment methods should be used reasonably to achieve the purpose of radical cure as much as possible, while taking into account the patient's quality of life. Among them, whether the staging of gastric cancer can be strictly grasped is very important in deciding the treatment plan.
