Is grapefruit a pomelo?

Is grapefruit a pomelo?

In autumn, there is a fruit that matures in large quantities and that is grapefruit, and there are many types of grapefruit. And faced with various kinds of grapefruit, many people can't tell which variety they are. There is also a common fruit in the supermarket, and that is grapefruit. Grapefruit tastes a bit strange when eaten raw, so many people like to squeeze grapefruit into juice to drink. But can the fruit grapefruit be a pomelo?

Grapefruit and pomelo sound like there is no difference, and some people even mistake them for the same fruit. In fact, grapefruit and pomelo are very similar in appearance. However, there are many differences between the two. Let me introduce to you the differences between grapefruit and pomelo. Friends who like to eat pomelo, come and have a look.

Difference between grapefruit and pomelo

1. The difference between categories and origins

Grapefruit, also known as grapefruit, is the ripe fruit of the Rutaceae plant pomelo. In its place of origin in my country, this kind of grapefruit is also called Huyou. The seeds of this grapefruit were brought to Florida, USA by the Portuguese from Zhejiang Province in my country in the 1830s.

Pomelo is an evergreen tree of the Rutaceae family. The fruit it bears is much larger than that of citrus fruits, and its peel is relatively thick. Even after it matures, its peel is still relatively green, with just a slight hint of yellow, and the bark of this grapefruit is very rough. It has a lot of flesh and rich juice. It tastes sour and sweet with a little astringency. Compared to grapefruit, it has the most seeds. This pomelo is native to Thailand and the Malay Peninsula, and was later introduced to China. It is now widely cultivated mainly in South China.

2. Differences in growth environment

Grapefruit has high requirements for heat, and the annual average temperature in the planting area must be above 18°C. It can be planted in places with an annual accumulated temperature of over 6000℃, and can produce high-quality fruits above 7000℃. It is colder than lemon and can withstand extreme minimum temperatures of around -10℃. The most suitable soil is loose, deep, fertile, neutral to slightly acidic soil. It does not require much rain, with an annual rainfall of more than 1000mm. It can be planted in places with wet or dry weather, and can grow and bear fruit well in strong light or cloudy weather. Around 1940, grapefruit was introduced to my country for trial planting, but it has not been promoted to date, and only a small number of sporadic plantings are still seen in provinces such as Zhejiang and Jiangxi.

Pomelo likes to grow in warm and humid places. It is most suitable to cultivate it during the rainy season in spring and autumn every year, so that it can absorb a lot of water. The pomelo tree is a subtropical evergreen fruit tree. Pomelo is not very demanding on the soil. As long as the soil is deep and the drainage is good, it can be planted, but sandy loam soil is best for planting. Pomelo is not very demanding on terrain and can be planted on plains, beaches, hills, low mountains, and mountains below 500 meters above sea level with a slope not exceeding 25 degrees. The grapefruit is of better quality. When planting grapefruit in the mountains, we must take advantage of the "inversion layer" phenomenon caused by radiant heat dissipation in winter, and avoid planting in the valleys at the bottom of the pot where cold air easily accumulates to prevent frost damage. Mountainous areas near large reservoirs often have a climate that is favorable to the growth of pomelo, making it particularly suitable for its development.

3. Differences in nutritional value

1. Grapefruit is high in folate, while pomelo is low in folate

There is a large amount of folic acid in grapefruit, while the folic acid content in ordinary grapefruit is very low. This natural folic acid is an important substance for preventing pregnancy syndrome. It is also an important nutrient that women must have after pregnancy. It can promote the development and generation of the fetus. The natural folic acid contained in grapefruit can prevent anemia symptoms for women who are taking birth control pills or are pregnant.

2. Grapefruit contains unique grapefruitin, but pomelo does not contain grapefruitin

Grapefruit can help the body absorb calcium and iron more easily, and it promotes the growth and development of human bones. Grapefruit contains grapefruitin, a substance that is not found in ordinary grapefruit. This substance can stimulate the bone-forming genes in human cells when it enters the human body, allowing new bones to be generated quickly. Therefore, people who eat grapefruit can not only improve their bone health, but also quickly regenerate broken bones.

3. Grapefruit contains a particularly high potassium content and no sodium ions

The potassium in grapefruit is also the biggest difference in nutritional value between it and ordinary grapefruit. Because grapefruit has a high potassium content but almost no sodium, it has an excellent regulating effect on human blood pressure after entering the human body, and can ensure the balance of human biochemical metabolism. Because most human high blood pressure is caused by excessive sodium in the human body and a large loss of potassium, and grapefruit can make up for this deficiency in the body, which is an important reason why it is more popular than ordinary grapefruit.

4. Grapefruit contains more vitamin C than pomelo

Grapefruit contains many vitamins, especially vitamin C, which is several times higher than that of ordinary grapefruit. Therefore, eating grapefruit regularly is beneficial to patients with cardiovascular disease and obesity. Grapefruit contains valuable natural vitamin P, rich vitamin C and soluble fiber, and is a fruit with low sugar content. Vitamin P can enhance the function of skin and pores, which is beneficial to skin health and beauty. Vitamin C can participate in the synthesis of human collagen and promote the production of antibodies to enhance the body's detoxification function.
