Treatments for breast cancer There are six types of treatments for breast cancer, including surgery, radiotherapy, endocrine therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and traditional Chinese medicine treatment, which are still effectively used in clinical practice. (1) Surgical treatment: It is a radical treatment for early-stage breast cancer and a palliative treatment for late-stage breast cancer. Total mastectomy, combined with axillary dissection and preservation of the pectoral muscles, is considered the modern standard treatment for patients with stage I breast cancer and some patients with stage II breast cancer. (2) Radiotherapy: It is one of the main treatment methods for this disease and is a local treatment method. Radiotherapy is used for: ① radical radiotherapy; ② preoperative and postoperative adjuvant therapy; ③ palliative radiotherapy. The initial effect of radiotherapy, supplemented by smaller-scale surgery (such as tumor resection), is encouraging. (3) Endocrine therapy: Surgical resection and radiotherapy can achieve the goal of radical cure, while endocrine therapy has a control effect on the growth and regression of breast cancer. About 1/3 of patients with advanced breast cancer can achieve complete or partial remission by undergoing ovarian, adrenal or pituitary resection. (4) Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy has become an active treatment measure for breast cancer at all stages. In early cases, adjuvant chemotherapy after radical surgery can improve the cure rate; in late cases, chemotherapy combined with other treatments can also relieve the disease and prolong survival. Breast cancer is relatively sensitive to chemotherapy. It is more suitable for postmenopausal women with positive lymph node signs. (5) Immunotherapy: For many years, people have been exploring the application of immunology to treat breast cancer. Theoretically, immunotherapy is the most specific, damaging only tumor cells without damaging normal cells. The therapeutic effect is systemic and is suitable for treating non-localized tumors. Despite many attempts, none of them have achieved the expected results. (6) Treatment with traditional Chinese medicine: Traditional Chinese medicine has its own unique features in treating tumors. All breast cancer patients, regardless of whether they undergo postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy, should take traditional Chinese medicine to strengthen their body’s resistance to cancer. When undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy, taking traditional Chinese medicine can reduce toxic and side effects and enhance the anti-cancer effect.
