Which is more accurate, urine test or blood test

In modern medicine, there are many ways to detect whether the human body has disease, and the means of examination for different diseases are also different. But when people go to the hospital for a check-up, the doctor will ask them to do a blood test or a urine test. Especially when women find that they are pregnant and go to the hospital to test whether they are pregnant, they usually do a blood test or a urine test, but which one is more accurate?

It is safe to say that going to the hospital for a blood test will help you know you are pregnant earlier than taking a pregnancy test.

Generally, a woman’s “pregnancy” can be detected through a urine pregnancy test 35 days after her menstruation stops: a normal non-pregnant woman will show a negative result, while a pregnant woman will show a positive result.

After a woman becomes pregnant, it usually takes a few days for the fertilized egg to implant before changes in her body's endocrine system occur. When the male's sperm combines with the female's egg to form a fertilized egg which is implanted in the uterus, a new hormone is produced in the female's body, which is medically called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). This hormone can be detected in the urine through an early pregnancy test strip 7 to 10 days after conception. This is the working principle of the urine pregnancy test (early pregnancy test) - the pregnancy test stick.

Occasionally, a woman who is already pregnant may have a negative urine pregnancy test result. The reasons are as follows:

First, the pregnancy is still in the early stages, and the hormone level in the pregnant woman's urine is still at a very low level and cannot be detected;

Second, pregnant women drink too much water, which dilutes the concentration of HCG in urine;

Third, the amount excreted by the kidneys is small;

The fourth is the quality of the test paper;

There are also unknown reasons that need further research.

There are some rules for collecting urine

You can do a urine pregnancy test at the hospital, or you can buy an early pregnancy test strip at a pharmacy and do it yourself at home. People who take a pregnancy test at home should make sure they are capable of doing it well and should read the instructions carefully or consult someone with experience. If you are not sure, you might as well go to the hospital.

To ensure accurate results, morning urine must be used for urine pregnancy tests because morning urine is concentrated and has higher hormone levels. In order to increase the positive rate of the test, you should try to reduce your water intake the night before. If you want to go to the hospital for a check-up, it is best to get a container from the hospital laboratory in advance, because it contains preservatives and the urine is not easy to deteriorate; if you do not have the conditions, you can use any wide-mouth bottle, but it needs to be washed and boiled for sterilization or rinsed with boiling water. After collecting about 10 ml of morning urine, send it to the hospital for testing immediately. If the time is delayed too long, it may affect the accuracy of the test. This should be paid more attention to in the summer.

If you are worried that the results may not be accurate, you can have a blood test

If your period is overdue and the urine pregnancy test is negative, but you are worried that the pregnancy was not detected in the early stages, you can consider going to the hospital to check the HCG concentration in your blood. Blood is more accurate and sensitive than urine and can usually be detected 8 to 9 days after fertilization.

For women who are preparing to become mothers, if they encounter amenorrhea and a negative urine pregnancy test, it is best not to take any medicine casually. It is best to consult a doctor in the hospital or consider using medicines that are safer for the fetus and have few side effects to prevent accidental ingestion of medicines that may have adverse effects on the fetus in early pregnancy.
