Swelling of cheeks

Cheek swelling often occurs after wisdom tooth extraction, starting 12-24 hours after surgery and gradually subsiding within 3-5 days. The tissue in the swollen area is soft and elastic, and the skin can be pinched, which is mainly caused by exudation of traumatic tissue and obstruction of lymphatic return.

Infect

Dry socket

Although the oral cavity is a polluted environment, infection can be prevented because the maxillofacial area has rich blood supply and strong anti-inflammatory ability. Extracting teeth during the inflammatory period may cause the inflammation to spread, so try not to extract teeth during the inflammatory period.

【Judgment criteria】

After biting the gauze ball for 30 minutes and spitting it out, it is normal if there is only a small amount of blood or a small amount of bleeding in the saliva within 24 hours; spitting out blood clots or continuous bleeding are bleeding complications.

After the anesthesia period of tooth extraction, it is normal if there is no obvious pain in the tooth extraction wound; slight pain that can be tolerated without taking analgesics is mild pain; moderate pain that requires taking analgesics to tolerate is moderate pain; and severe pain that cannot be relieved by taking general analgesics is severe pain.

The acute inflammation after tooth extraction does not subside significantly, the swelling worsens, or dry socket appears in the extraction wound.

Applying cold compress to the cheek within 4-6 hours after tooth extraction, 15 minutes/hour, can help prevent edema. For mandibular molars with excessive tooth extraction trauma, filling the alveolar socket with iodine-form gelatin sponge can prevent bleeding after tooth extraction. The alveolar socket should be rinsed with 3% hydrogen peroxide and 0.9% saline first to remove necrotic tissue and then fill with gauze. However, because iodine form has a special odor, many patients cannot adapt to it clinically, and a few patients refuse to use it. It is recommended to fill the socket with Kangfuxin liquid gelatin sponge, which can effectively prevent dry socket and reduce the occurrence of putrefactive dry socket.
