Normal value of human basal metabolic rate

Normal value of human basal metabolic rate

Making themselves younger and healthier is what middle-aged and elderly people want most. One aspect that can show that one has good physical fitness is through the calculation of the basal metabolic rate. A high basal metabolic rate means that one is in good physical condition. The calculation method for the normal value of the human body's basal metabolic rate is relatively simple. You can use a series of formulas to see what value you will get. If it is lower than the normal value, you should pay attention.

Basal metabolic rate refers to the minimum amount of calories required for a person's body to maintain normal life when he or she is at rest. It is mainly used for breathing, heartbeat, blood circulation, oxygen transport and glandular secretion, kidney filtration and excretion, maintaining body temperature and muscle tension, etc.

Usually our body consumes calories in four ways: basal metabolism, physical activity, food thermal effect and growth and development. Physical activity accounts for about 15-30% of total calorie consumption, food thermal effect accounts for about 10-15%, and basal metabolism is the most powerful, accounting for about 60-75% of the total calorie consumption of the human body. Therefore, it can be said that the basal metabolic rate basically determines how much calories are consumed every day. This is why with the same food intake and physical activity, some people are thin and some are fat. People with slim figures may have a higher basal metabolic rate.

Calculation formula

(1)Basal metabolic rate%=(pulse rate+pulse pressure)-111(Gale)

(2) Basal metabolic rate% = 0.75 × (pulse rate + pulse pressure difference × 0.74) - 72 (Read)

(3)Basal metabolic rate% = 1.28 × (pulse rate + pulse pressure difference) - 116 (Kosa)

The unit of basal metabolic rate is KJ/m2/h (kilojoules per square meter per hour), which is the kilojoules of heat dissipated per square meter of body surface per hour.

The basal metabolic rate is very close among normal people of the same gender, weight and age group, and the metabolic rate of more than 90% of them does not differ from the average value by more than 15%. Therefore, this percentage is used as the limit of normal value in clinical practice. Exceeding this limit is considered to be a basal metabolic abnormality.

For example, patients with hyperthyroidism may have a basal metabolic rate 20 to 80% higher than normal, while those with hypothyroidism may have a basal metabolic rate 20 to 40% lower than normal. The determination of basal metabolic rate is a simple and effective method for clinically diagnosing thyroid diseases. Other factors, such as insufficient secretion of hormones from the adrenal cortex and anterior pituitary, may also manifest as a decrease in basal metabolic rate. When body temperature rises, the basal metabolic rate also increases. Generally, for every 1°C increase in body temperature, the basal metabolic rate increases by 13%. When people are hungry or malnourished for a long time, their basal metabolism will decrease. In addition, measuring the basal metabolic rate and the energy metabolism rate at different activity intensities is also the basis for rationally formulating nutritional standards and arranging people's meals.
