Seasonal conjunctivitis eye drops

Seasonal conjunctivitis eye drops

In fact, in this season, many eye problems are most likely to occur. The most common one is seasonal conjunctivitis, which is an inflammation of the conjunctiva caused by seasonal allergic infection. It usually occurs in summer or autumn, and is more common in spring. The frequency of occurrence in men is many times higher than that in women. The main causes of the disease include infection, pollen allergy, etc.

Seasonal conjunctivitis Conjunctivitis

This disease is seasonal conjunctivitis. It occurs in the warm seasons of spring and summer, relieves on its own after the cool autumn, and recurs in the spring and summer of the following year. Therefore, it is also called spring conjunctivitis. It is more common in children or adolescents (3 to 25 years old), and more common in males than in females (the male to female ratio is 3:1).

What causes spring conjunctivitis?

The cause of the disease is unknown, but it is generally believed to be an allergic reaction to dust, pollen, sunlight, etc. It may be a type I allergic reaction. Mild cases will heal themselves after 3 to 4 years, while severe cases may relapse continuously for more than 10 years.

What are the symptoms of vernal conjunctivitis

The symptoms are bilateral, with symptoms of itching and burning, mild photophobia, tearing, and sticky secretions.

According to the location of the lesion, it can be divided into conjunctival type, limbal type, or a mixed type where both exist simultaneously. The details are as follows.

1. Conjunctival type

It starts with congestion of the conjunctiva, followed by the development of many hard, flat, neatly arranged enlarged papillae with pale yellow grooves between the papillae, like a pebble-paved road. The conjunctival surface is light red or gray, the tarsal plate becomes thickened and hardened, and eosinophils can be found in conjunctival scrapings.

2. Limbal type (conjunctival type)

Gray-yellow gelatinous protrusions occur around the entire or part of the corneal margin and the nearby conjunctiva. Over time, the surface becomes rough and dirty. In severe cases, it may form a dam around the corneal margin.

3. Mixed type: The above two types of lesions exist at the same time.

What tests are needed for spring conjunctivitis

According to the characteristics of this disease, the onset is highly seasonal, mostly occurs in adolescents, more males than females, the disease course is long, it can heal itself, and there are typical physical signs, so diagnosis is not difficult. But it should be differentiated from general allergic conjunctivitis. The latter is mostly caused by chemical or physical reasons, drugs, cosmetics and ultraviolet stimulation, and is often accompanied by eczema changes on the eyelids, eyelid margins, or the entire body. It has nothing to do with the season and improves after avoiding contact with pathogens. Laboratory examinations showed eosinophils in conjunctival secretion smears or conjunctival scrapings of patients with this disease, and elevated IgE in serum and tears.

How to treat

You can take anti-allergic drugs orally, and focus on maintaining eye hygiene.

Since the allergens are difficult to find, there is currently no specific treatment.

1. Topical application of 0.5% cortisone solution and 2-4% disodium cromoglycate solution four times a day is effective, but it cannot prevent recurrence. 1:5000 epinephrine eye drops can also relieve symptoms, and antihistamines are also helpful.

2. For stubborn cases, beta-ray radiotherapy or cryotherapy can be used.
