Does barium sulfite dissolve in dilute nitric acid?

Does barium sulfite dissolve in dilute nitric acid?

Barium sulfite is soluble in dilute nitric acid, but of course, we must also pay attention to the concentration of dilute nitric acid not being too low. Barium sulfite is a light gray or yellow-green crystal. It is widely used in industry. For example, it is often used to make barium salts. It plays an important role in the papermaking industry and leather dehairing. It is an important chemical raw material. Let us learn more about this aspect.

Is barium sulfite soluble in dilute nitric acid?

Dissolve! According to the principle of strong acid making weak acid, sulfurous acid and barium nitrate are generated, and sulfurous acid decomposes into sulfur dioxide gas and runs away! Of course, nitric acid cannot be too dilute!

Barium sulfite

Barium sulfite is a white equiaxed cubic crystal, sometimes light gray or yellow-green, and the industrial product is a light brown or black powder. It is mainly used in the manufacture of barium salts, lithopone and luminous paints, and is also used as a rubber vulcanizer and leather depilatory agent. Also used in papermaking.

application

It is mainly used as a raw material for the manufacture of various barium salts and lead powder; it is also used as a rubber vulcanizing agent and a leather depilatory agent. Used to generate hydrogen sulfide in analytical chemistry. Used as acaricide and fungicide in agriculture.

Reducing: 2BaSO3+O2=2BaSO4

Identification

A white precipitate that is soluble in acid and easily oxidized to barium sulfate.[8]

When distinguishing sulfite and sulfate, barium nitrate solution acidified with dilute nitric acid cannot be used for testing, because hydrogen ions have strong oxidizing properties when meeting nitrate ions, and can easily oxidize sulfite into sulfate. Barium chloride solution should be added separately to produce a precipitate. Then dilute hydrochloric acid is added to partially dissolve the precipitate and a pungent gas is smelled. Then fuchsin solution is passed to cause the solution to fade. After heating again, the solution regains its color, which proves that the original substance is barium sulfite. Principle: Barium sulfite reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce water, sulfur dioxide and barium chloride. Reaction equation: BaSO3+2HCl=SO2↑+H2O+BaCl2

preparation

Barite. Use coal powder reduction method to mix barite and anthracite in the ratio of barite: anthracite = 100: (25-27) and then crush (less than 5rmm). Reduce and roast at 1000-1200℃ for 1-2h. The obtained crude barium sulfide melt (containing BaS>65%) is leached with hot water, and the concentration of barium sulfide solution reaches about 220 g/L. Then, it is clarified, filtered, evaporated and precipitated to obtain barium sulfide solution. The coal slag after leaching (BaSO4+4C→BaS+4CO↑) is discharged after washing, and the barium in it can be recovered or used as building materials.

Gas reduction method: hydrogen (natural gas) is introduced into barite at 850-900°C for reduction reaction to obtain a pure barium sulfide melt free of coal and ash. Its barium salt BaSO4+4H2→BaS+4H2O is added to a sodium sulfite solution and heated to react to generate a precipitate, which is then filtered and dried to obtain the product. It can also be prepared by passing sulfur dioxide gas into a barium hydroxide solution for neutralization reaction to generate a precipitate, which is then filtered and dried.
