Filamentary keratitis is a disease characterized by the appearance of epithelial filamentous lesions of varying sizes on the surface of the cornea, and its cause is still unknown.

Qingdao University Medical College once used a variety of conventional methods to treat a patient with intractable filamentary keratitis, but the results were not good. Later, under local anesthesia, the patient was treated with 0.5% metronidazole injection to flush the conjunctival sac, and then a sterile cotton swab dipped in honey was used to apply to the cornea and wipe off the filaments, resulting in a short-term cure.

Metronidazole is the drug of choice against anaerobic bacteria. Flushing the conjunctival sac with metronidazole solution is beneficial for killing anaerobic bacteria. However, when using the drug, care should be taken not to flush the cornea directly, but to flush the conjunctival sac, otherwise it will aggravate the damage to the corneal epithelium.

Honey contains a variety of nutrients. When applied directly on the cornea, it can moisturize, nourish and protect the cornea.

The high osmotic pressure of honey can significantly reduce exudate and alleviate corneal epithelial edema.

Honey also contains a variety of biochemically active proteases, which have a strong bactericidal effect and can effectively shorten the time to cure filamentous keratitis.
