Lymph nodes are transit stations of the lymphatic circulatory system. Most of them are round, bean-shaped or kidney-shaped, and range in size from 1 to 2 mm to 1 cm. Its function is to process foreign matter and its allergens, produce humoral immunity and cellular immunity, and is one of the body's defense systems. It is also a window for observing certain diseases. For example, tumor metastasis and inflammation can be clearly diagnosed through lymph node examination. Lymph nodes are widely distributed throughout the body, often located at the gateways to internal organs and along their course. Common causes of lymphadenopathy include acute inflammation, lymphocytic tumor-like lesions, lymphocytic malignancies, hematopoietic malignancies, and lymph node metastasis of other tumors.

(1) Swollen lymph nodes. If the lymph nodes are larger than normal (1-2 mm to 1 cm), are tender, and appear red, swollen, and adherent, it may be an acute inflammation. Chronic cases have no redness or swelling on the surface, but there is swelling and discomfort, and mild tenderness exists. When suffering from tumor metastasis or lymphatic tissue tumor originating from the hematopoietic system, the lymph nodes will be swollen, fused into pieces, inactive, non-tender, and have a slight feeling of discomfort. If the supraclavicular lymph nodes, trochlear lymph nodes, etc. are touched, you need to be alert to whether the tumor has metastasized.

(2) The patient has the characteristics of the primary disease: for example, inflammation is often accompanied by redness, swelling, heat and pain in the local lesions, and the whole body may have a fever with an increase in white blood cell count; viral infection is accompanied by a fever and rash, multiple swollen lymph nodes in the neck, or pain, and the lymph nodes gradually return to normal after the condition improves. In patients with chronic inflammation, chronic inflammation may be found in the adjacent local tissues, such as stomatitis, tonsillitis, foot infection, etc. When there is swelling and pain, lumps may be found in nearby organs, such as the digestive tract, which often metastasizes to the supraclavicular lymph nodes. The enlarged lymph nodes are often adherent, fused, non-tender, and immobile.
