Is 300-degree myopia serious?

If you always have trouble seeing distant objects clearly in your daily life, you probably have myopia. Myopia has become an increasingly common eye problem. Modern medicine classifies myopia into different degrees according to the severity of the disease. If the degree of myopia is higher, it means the myopia problem is more serious. So if the degree of myopia is 300 degrees, is this myopia serious?

In fact, it is difficult to define the degree of severity, but it can be simply stated that when the degree of myopia is less than 300 degrees, it is low myopia; when the degree of myopia is above 300 degrees, it is moderate myopia, and it is recommended to wear glasses for a long time; when the degree of myopia exceeds 600 degrees, it is high myopia, which is more serious and is severe myopia.

But the question is, how can myopia lead to blindness?

Let us understand it this way: for every 300-degree increase in myopia, the anterior-posterior diameter of the eyeball will increase by approximately 1 mm. Therefore, the higher the degree, the longer the eyeball, the thinner the eyeball wall, choroid, and retina will be, and the risk of blinding eye diseases such as retinal detachment, macular degeneration, and glaucoma will be greatly increased.

Of course, not all high myopia is dangerous.

Ordinary high myopia: The degree of myopia exceeds 600 degrees, but the degree has basically stabilized and will no longer deepen. The corrected visual acuity can reach 1.0, and there is no difference between the fundus and that of normal people, as shown in the figure below.

There is basically no need to worry about blindness for ordinary high myopia, but for pathological high myopia, it is not that simple.

Pathological myopia: refers to the condition in which the degree of myopia continues to deepen after the age of 25 and the eyeball becomes longer and longer. From the perspective of the fundus, in addition to the thinning of the retina, other lesions may also occur, the corrected visual acuity continues to decline, and eventually blindness may occur. The picture below is a fundus photograph of a patient with pathological myopia.

It can be seen that the retina and choroid at the fundus are significantly thinner, the atrophy arc around the optic disc is obvious, there are lesions in the macular area, and the blood vessels have become very thin.

Therefore, ordinary high myopia patients with myopia exceeding 600 degrees are not recommended to participate in strenuous sports such as diving, bungee jumping, and boxing, which will greatly increase the risk of retinal detachment for ordinary people. Patients with pathological myopia are advised not to participate in competitive sports such as basketball and football, in addition to diving, bungee jumping, and boxing.
