1. Normal value of serum iron (Fe):

Adult men: 11.0~30.0/μmol/L (61~167μg/dl).

Adult women: 9.0~27.0μmol/L (50~150μg/dl).

Children: 9.0~32.2μmol/L (50~180μg/dl).

Elderly: 7.2~14.4μmol/L (40~80μg/dl).

2. Clinical significance of serum iron (Fe):

1. Pathological increase:

(1) Increased destruction of red blood cells, such as hemolytic anemia;

(2) Red blood cell regeneration or maturation disorders, such as aplastic anemia, megaloblastic anemia, etc.;

(3) Reduced iron utilization, such as hematopoietic dysfunction caused by lead poisoning or vitamin B6 deficiency;

(4) Increased release of stored iron, such as acute hepatocellular damage, necrotizing hepatitis, etc.

(5) Increased iron absorption rate, such as hemochromatosis and hemosiderosis;

(6) Acute poisoning caused by repeated blood transfusions or intramuscular injection of iron supplements.

2. Pathological decrease:

(1) Insufficient intake of nutrients, such as malnutrition, gastrointestinal lesions, peptic ulcers, chronic diarrhea, etc.

(2) Increased iron loss from the body, such as blood loss, including massive and hidden blood loss, especially nephritis, renal tuberculosis, vaginal bleeding, ulcer disease, etc., and bleeding from the genitourinary and gastrointestinal tracts;

(3) The body's iron needs increase but are not replenished in time, such as during pregnancy and infant growth;

(4) Reduced release of stored iron in the body, such as acute and chronic infections, uremia, etc., which can cause reduced iron release;

(5) Certain drug treatments, such as adrenocorticotropic hormone or corticotropin, high doses of aspirin, cholestyramine, etc.

3. Physiological decrease: During menstruation and pregnancy for women and during the growth period for infants, the need for iron in the body increases, which may cause a decrease in serum iron. This is a physiological phenomenon.

3. Precautions for serum iron (Fe):

1. Serum iron is highest in the morning and gradually decreases in the afternoon. A blood sample should be collected in the morning on an empty stomach.

2. Before the examination, be cautious when using iron supplements or avoid eating foods high in iron, such as animal liver; avoid eating substances that can chelate with iron, such as tea.
