Occlumency is a magical art that is used to resist external mental infiltration. It can seal the brain to resist magical invasion and influence. The opposing magic is Legilimency. Someone who is proficient in the art of Occlumency is called an Occlumency Master.

Occlumency is a prerequisite to defeating a Legilimency's lie-detection abilities, employing dubious practices such as avoiding face-to-face or eye contact in the process. Basic Occlumency involves clearing the mind of thoughts and emotions so that the Legilimency cannot find any emotional connection to the memory the polygraphee is trying to conceal. Simple resistance to Legilimency attacks requires similar skills to those required to resist the Imperius Curse. In its more advanced forms, Occlumency allows its user to repress only certain feelings and memories which are the exact opposite of what the user would like the Legilimency to believe, thus allowing the Occlumency to lie without revealing themselves.

Leviticus is a forbidden spell, and all related information is placed in the forbidden books section. Students do not learn Occlumency at Hogwarts, even at the level of NEWTs.

Severus Snape was an extremely accomplished Occlumency because he was able to operate as a spy among the Death Eaters right under the nose of Voldemort, who was an accomplished Legilimency master and had good reason to doubt Snape's loyalty. Dumbledore was also proficient in Occlumency.

In order to prevent Voldemort from entering Harry's mind (Harry and Voldemort could sense each other's thoughts), Dumbledore asked Severus Snape to teach Harry Occlumency. However, Harry only learned some basic theories, but made no progress in resisting attacks. The main reason was the long-term conflict between him and his mentor Snape. After accidentally entering Snape's memory, Snape terminated his teaching (Chapter 28 of Order of the Phoenix). But Harry finally mastered Occlumency after burying Dobby (Deathly Hallows, Chapter 23).

Snape discovered that Bellatrix may have taught Draco Malfoy Occlumency, and that Malfoy was able to perform it with ease. (Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 15)

Horace Slughorn was also a person who was good at Occlumency. Dumbledore told Harry that his Occlumency was very powerful, otherwise he would not have allowed Harry to request his memory and could have used Legilimency directly.

Voldemort discovered that Harry Potter was able to enter his mind and used Occlumency on him.

In the practice of Occlumency, the practitioner should empty his mind.
