TCM Syndrome Differentiation of Chronic Pharyngitis

TCM Syndrome Differentiation of Chronic Pharyngitis

The incidence of chronic pharyngitis is very high. So far, there is actually no recognized effective treatment drug and treatment method. The Chinese medicine diagnosis of chronic pharyngitis is kidney deficiency and excessive Yin fire. If you have chronic pharyngitis, you must avoid certain foods during the onset of the disease. This is the most effective treatment method. At the same time, you should go to the hospital for examination and treatment in time to solve the problem from the root.

1. Traditional Chinese Medicine Diagnosis

This disease often occurs on the basis of deficiency of yin and yang, qi and blood in the internal organs, and the course of the disease is generally long. Clinically, Yin deficiency is the most common, while Yang deficiency is relatively rare. There are also cases where Yin deficiency or Yang deficiency is accompanied by "phlegm coagulation" or "blood stasis", which manifests as deficiency with excess. Careful distinction must be made during syndrome differentiation.

Lung and Kidney Yin Deficiency

Symptoms: dry and sore throat, burning sensation, foreign body sensation, or itchy throat and dry cough, with little and sticky sputum. The symptoms are lighter in the morning and heavier in the evening. They may be accompanied by afternoon hot flashes, flushing of the cheeks, insomnia, dry stool, soreness of waist and knees, etc. Examination shows that the pharyngeal mucosa is dark red and dry, the tongue is red with little fluid, the tongue coating is less or peeled, and the pulse is thready and rapid.

Analysis: ① Syndrome differentiation: The key points of this syndrome are dry and sore throat, burning sensation, dark red mucosa, lighter in the morning and heavier in the evening, dry stool, red tongue with little coating, and thin and rapid pulse. ②Pathogenesis: Deficiency of lung and kidney yin fluid leads to lack of nourishment to the throat, resulting in dry and painful throat or foreign body sensation; yin deficiency leads to hyperactivity of fire, and when virtual fire disturbs the heart, there will be a burning sensation in the throat and flushing of the cheekbones; virtual fire refines body fluid into phlegm, and the dry phlegm sticks to the throat, resulting in itchy throat, dry cough, and little and sticky phlegm; yang energy is strong in the morning and yin energy is strong in the afternoon, and when yin is weak, the symptoms will be lighter in the morning and heavier in the evening, with hot flashes in the afternoon; insufficient yin fluid leads to dry stool, and when virtual fire disturbs the heart, there will be restlessness and insomnia; when kidney is weak, the waist and knees will be sore and weak; a red tongue with little coating and a thin and rapid pulse are signs of yin deficiency and hyperactivity of fire.

Spleen and Kidney Yang Deficiency

Symptoms: slight pain in the throat, choking discomfort, or dry throat without appetite, preference for hot soup when drinking, no redness or swelling in the throat or slightly pale white, low voice, lack of energy, clear and long urine, loose stools, poor appetite, cold hands and feet, sore waist and weak legs, pale tongue, slippery white tongue coating, and deep, thready and weak pulse.

Analysis: ① Syndrome differentiation: The key points of this syndrome are discomfort in the throat, dry throat without desire to drink, no redness or swelling in the throat, low spirits, pale tongue with white and slippery coating, and deep, thready and weak pulse, which can be seen in patients who have been using bitter and cold medicines for a long time. ②Pathogenesis: Deficiency of True Yang and internal excess of Yin and cold lead to the excess of Yin suppressing Yang and the upward rise of Yang, which causes the false impression of "upward heat" such as slight sore throat or dry throat. Because its essence is internal excess of Yin and cold, not insufficient body fluid, although the throat feels dry, one does not feel like drinking, but prefers hot soup when drinking. Low voice, lack of energy, clear and long urination, and cold hands and feet are all signs of insufficient Yang. Poor appetite and loose stools are signs of spleen deficiency. Sore waist and weak legs are signs of kidney deficiency. Pale tongue with white and slippery coating and deep, thready and weak pulse are signs of Yang deficiency.
