Is fluorine gas toxic?

Once the human body inhales fluorine gas, it will cause abnormal development of teeth or bones, and make the bone density too hard, which is easy to fracture. In severe cases, it will irritate the upper respiratory tract, causing pulmonary edema or pulmonary hemorrhage, and cause burns, ulcers, necrosis and other symptoms on the skin. So is fluorine gas toxic?

First, is fluorine gas toxic? Fluorine is a highly toxic gas that can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory mucosa. Since it reacts immediately with water to form hydrogen fluoride, it exhibits the same toxicity as hydrogen fluoride in most cases.

Second, when the fluorine concentration is 5-10 ppm, it begins to irritate the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, throat, etc., and can also cause pulmonary edema if the action lasts for a long time. Contact with skin can cause burning of hair, coagulative necrosis of the contact site, carbonization of epithelial tissue, etc. Chronic exposure may cause osteosclerosis and ligament calcification. Patients who inhale fluoride should be immediately transferred to a safe, uncontaminated place to rest and keep warm and comfortable. In case of eye or skin irritation, rinse immediately with water and seek medical attention. The workplace should be ventilated to keep the air fresh and dry. It must be stored in special steel cylinders. When storing, cylinders must be isolated from other materials, especially materials that can react with fluorine, and kept away from places prone to fire. When a fire occurs, firefighters must operate in an explosion-proof shelter and must not spray water directly on the leak, otherwise it will fuel the fire. Carbon dioxide, dry powder, sand and soil can be used to extinguish fire, and waste gas can be absorbed by water.

Third, fluoride poisoning is a chronic systemic disease, the early symptoms of which are fatigue, loss of appetite, dizziness, headache, memory loss, etc. After excessive fluoride enters the human body, it is mainly deposited on the teeth and bones, forming dental fluorosis and skeletal fluorosis. Fluorosis appears as white opaque spots on the tooth surface. As the spots expand, the teeth lose their luster and appear as yellow, yellowish brown or dark brown spots. In severe cases, shallow pits or pattern defects appear on the tooth surface, the tooth shape is incomplete, and the teeth often fall out early. Symptoms of skeletal fluorosis include low back and leg pain, joint stiffness, bone deformity, lower limb bending, hunchback, and even paralysis. Women suffer from difficult labor due to pelvic deformation.

Is fluorine gas poisonous? The answer is yes, it is definitely harmful to the body. If you are exposed to it frequently, you will get fluorosis, the main symptom of which is gradual deformity of bones throughout the body. If it is the mother's, it will also affect the next generation! It is best to buy a special gas mask to wear.
