What's wrong with the swollen corners of my mouth?

Everyone knows that lips can reflect some potential diseases of the body. For example, if the lips are too dark, it means that there is too much heat in your body; if the lips are light, it means that your qi and blood are relatively weak. Swelling of the corners of the mouth may be caused by severe inflammation or edema, but other reasons are not ruled out. Here we will introduce to you what causes swollen corners of the mouth.

1. Allergic cheilitis

The lips are the junction of the human skin and mucous membrane. Although the area is not large, the diseases that can occur are not simple. The most common lip disease is cheilitis, which is characterized by symptoms such as swelling, pain or erosion of the lips. Clinically, there are many types of cheilitis, such as allergic cheilitis, actinic cheilitis, exfoliative cheilitis, glandular cheilitis, granulomatous cheilitis and plasma cell cheilitis, but only the first two have clear causes, and some have no clear causes. However, through observation, we can always find some factors that are related to the onset of the disease or can induce and aggravate the condition, namely allergic reactions, mechanical stimulation, infection factors, nutritional deficiencies, and genetic factors. Symptoms of allergic cheilitis: Allergic cheilitis is caused by contact of the lips or the skin around them with certain irritants. It occurs within hours or days after contact and may cause swelling and blisters of the lip mucosa, and even erosion and scabs, infection and suppuration to form ulcers, affecting eating and speaking. Treatment of allergic cheilitis: Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the lips are closely related to the spleen and stomach. Diseases of the spleen and stomach are often reflected in the lips. Conversely, abnormalities of the lips also reflect dysfunction of the spleen and stomach. Therefore, the treatment of cheilitis should start with the spleen and stomach. For example, if cheilitis is manifested by redness, swelling and erosion of the lips, it is mostly due to excessive heat in the spleen and stomach, and the treatment is mainly to clear the spleen and stomach fire; if the lips are carbuncle, hard and painful, it is mostly due to excessive heat and toxicity, and the treatment is to clear away heat and detoxify; if the disease has lasted for a long time, and the lips are thickened, dry and hard, it is mostly due to spleen deficiency and stagnation of phlegm and dampness, and the treatment should focus on strengthening the spleen, resolving phlegm and dispersing nodules.

Excessive internal heat

"Getting angry" is a folk slang, also known as "heat", which can be explained from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine theory and belongs to the category of heat syndrome in traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that when the yin and yang of the human body are out of balance and the internal fire is strong, it will cause internal heat. Therefore, the so-called "fire" is used to describe certain hot symptoms in the body, and getting angry is the internal heat symptom that appears after the imbalance of yin and yang in the human body. Specific symptoms include red and swollen eyes, erosion at the corners of the mouth, yellow urine, toothache, sore throat, etc. "Getting angry" is more likely to occur in dry climates and continuous hot and humid weather.

It is generally believed that "fire" can be divided into two categories: "real fire" and "false fire". The common types of "fire" in clinical practice are "heart fire" and "liver fire". The solution is to "remove heat", which is the Chinese medicine method of clearing heat and purging fire. You can take yin-nourishing, heat-clearing, detoxifying and swelling-reducing medicines, or you can use Chinese medicine acupuncture, cupping, massage and other therapies. In daily life, we should pay attention to the combination of work and rest, and eat less spicy, fried and other hot foods.

Nodules under the skin

Subcutaneous nodules are hard, round or oval, painless nodules. The diameter is 0.2 to 10 cm. It is often located in areas subject to more friction, such as the extensor side of the elbow, Achilles tendon, scalp, ischial tuberosity or around joints. Rarely seen sites include the ears and bridge of the nose. Subcutaneous nodules rarely cause symptoms but occasionally rupture and become infected. Subcutaneous nodules typically grow slowly and may persist or disappear during disease remission. The appearance of subcutaneous nodules is closely related to high titer serum rheumatoid factor, severe joint destruction and active rheumatoid lesions.
