What is the reason for red eyes? What is the reason for red eyes?

I believe that many people will experience red eyes after staying up late, but there is also a phenomenon that even if you do not stay up late and your daily work and rest habits are good, you still have symptoms of red eyes. Since red eyes do not cause any discomfort to a certain extent, many people choose to ignore it, or even just go to the pharmacy to get some medicine. In fact, any disease is caused by multiple factors. Only by understanding the cause can we treat it symptomatically. So what is the cause of red eyes? Let’s take a look together below.

Red eyes are a symptom of a certain disease, not an independent disease. There are two situations of red eyes: one is bleeding and the other is congestion.

1. Eye hemorrhage: eyelid skin ruptures manifest as bleeding, which is easily identifiable by its bright red color. Small hemorrhages on the eyelid skin are seen after blunt eye trauma or severe coughing. High fever and sepsis may cause large areas of bleeding. Purple-red subcutaneous hemorrhages are common in heavier direct eye injuries, and may also be caused by injuries to the head, nose, and sinuses that affect the eyes. Fractures of the top of the orbit can cause hemorrhage on the upper eyelid, fractures of the orbital floor and skull base can cause hemorrhage on the lower eyelid, and fractures of the orbital apex often cause hemorrhage on the outer side of the eyelid.

Subconjunctival hemorrhage appears in strips or flakes with irregular shapes and is bright red. It turns purple-red when there is heavy bleeding. Common causes are: eye trauma, severe coughing, dry stool, vigorous rubbing of the eyes, and arteriosclerosis in the elderly. If you frequently have unexplained eye bleeding, you should see a doctor to check for systemic bleeding disorders.

2. Eye congestion: Eye congestion is often caused by inflammation. Eyelid congestion is manifested as redness of the eyelid skin, often accompanied by fever, swelling and pain. Conjunctival congestion is manifested as vascular dilation. There are conjunctival congestion and ciliary congestion.

Conjunctival congestion refers to obvious congestion around the edges of the eyelid conjunctiva or bulbar conjunctiva, with no congestion near the edge of the cornea. It is seen in conjunctivitis, trachoma, nearby inflammation, heavy drinking, long-term heavy smoking, as well as dust, drugs, physical and chemical stimulation, lack of sleep, high fever, etc. Infectious inflammation produces mucopurulent secretions (commonly known as eye mucus), but has no effect on vision.

Ciliary congestion manifests as a circular redness around the outer edge of the cornea, which is flushed or dark red, and the direction of the blood vessels is unclear. In severe cases, mixed congestion may occur, that is, conjunctival congestion and ciliary congestion exist at the same time. Ciliary congestion should be taken seriously, as it indicates that there is a disease in an important part of the eyeball. It is commonly seen in keratitis due to various reasons, corneal ulcers, corneal foreign bodies, scleritis, iritis, glaucoma, endophthalmitis, etc. It can have varying degrees of vision impact and should be treated in the hospital in time.

3. It may also be caused by lack of oxygen and fatigue . It is best not to look at light or computers that are irritating to the eyes when your eyes are tired. If conditions permit, you can go to the hospital to clean your eyes. The cleaning solution commonly used is borate water.
