How to filter water alkali

Scale is formed as a result of the precipitation of calcium and magnesium ions in water.

The hardness of water is defined as the content of calcium and magnesium salts in the water. The higher the content, the higher the hardness. The hardness that can be removed by boiling is called temporary hardness, also called carbonate hardness. The hardness that cannot be removed by boiling is called permanent hardness. The two types of hardness are collectively called total hardness.

Don’t be scared by the presence of a lot of scale. This is a good thing. The calcium and magnesium in the water have basically settled down, so there will be no problem with the water after boiling. Unless you have permanently hard water here.

For households with permanently hard water, the only solution is to soften it with chemicals.

The easiest way to turn hard water into soft water is to add enough slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) into the water container so that the magnesium salt in the water will precipitate out as magnesium hydroxide. Then add enough soda (impure sodium carbonate) so that all the calcium will precipitate out as calcium carbonate (including the slaked lime) The mixed sediment after two treatments slowly settles to the bottom of the container (the bottom of the container is preferably in a cone shape to facilitate the removal of the sediment). In this way, the upper part of the container is clean drinking water.

In fact, treating water with lime and soda does not purify the water, it just replaces the calcium and magnesium ions in the water with sodium ions. Therefore, a little dilute sulfuric acid should be added to the treated water to make the pH value of the water around 6.5 to promote its stability. When adding chemicals, you must add quicklime first and then soda, and you cannot do it the other way around.

Specific methods for removing scale

① Descaling the kettle by boiling sweet potatoes: Put more than half of the kettle's capacity of sweet potatoes, fill it with water, and cook the sweet potatoes. Next time you boil water, there will be no scale accumulation. But be careful not to scrub the inner wall of the kettle after boiling sweet potatoes, otherwise the descaling effect will be lost. For old kettles that are full of scale, after boiling them once or twice using the above method, not only will the original scale gradually fall off, but it will also prevent scale from accumulating again.

② Use baking soda to remove scale. When boiling water in an aluminum kettle with scale, add 1 teaspoon of baking soda and boil it for a few minutes to remove the scale.

③Boil eggs to remove scale. The scale on the kettle that boils water will become hard and difficult to remove after being used for a long time. If you use it to boil eggs twice, you will get the desired effect.

④ Use potato peels to remove scale. After using an aluminum kettle or aluminum pot for a period of time, a thin layer of scale will form. Put the potato peels in it, add appropriate amount of water, bring to a boil, and cook for about 10 minutes before removing them.
