Can opening windows for ventilation remove formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde is a very important industrial raw material that is flammable and pungent. Formaldehyde is very harmful to the human body. Long-term inhalation of formaldehyde will increase the risk of cancer. However, when we decorate a house, many materials contain formaldehyde. This is why a newly renovated house cannot be lived in. The formaldehyde needs to be allowed to evaporate slowly. So, can opening windows for ventilation remove formaldehyde? Let’s take a look below.

Although opening windows for ventilation is indeed effective, it can only remove the odor and formaldehyde left over from a newly renovated home. However, the volatilization period of formaldehyde is as long as 3 to 15 years. In other words, even if the formaldehyde is temporarily removed, if no effective formaldehyde removal methods are taken while living in the home, it is very likely to induce leukemia.

Currently, the more practical and widely recognized method is: place two electric fans in each room, then close the doors and windows, and turn on the electric fans for continuous use for 24 hours. Then open the doors and windows to ventilate for 2 hours, and then continue to close the doors and windows to heat the room temperature. During this process, relatively closed places such as wardrobes and drawers need to be opened. If you continue this for a month, you can basically remove the shallow formaldehyde in the material. If you are worried, you can extend the heating time. Of course, it would be better if high temperature treatment could be used before decoration.

Activated carbon is one of our common formaldehyde removal materials. It has a large adsorption capacity, but because it cannot decompose formaldehyde, it is easy to become saturated with adsorption and cause secondary pollution. It usually needs to be replaced once a month. In the first year of a new house, it must be replaced at least 10 times to be safe.

Luoting Stone is one of the commonly used methods in the environmental protection industry. It has a large adsorption capacity. Its main advantage is that it can decompose formaldehyde and completely make it disappear. This will leave extra pores to continue to adsorb formaldehyde, so it has a long lasting effect. The effective formaldehyde removal time is more than 3 years, which can solve the problem of long formaldehyde release period.

The subsequent formaldehyde volatilization is relatively slow. Without using inferior materials and closing the room all year round, formaldehyde can be effectively removed by using activated carbon and ventilation. It should be noted that general activated carbon can only absorb but not decompose. It will reach saturation after 20-30 days of use, thus losing its effect and becoming a source of formaldehyde release.
