Spasm of right lower eyelid

Spasm of right lower eyelid

The nerve under my right eyelid is always twitching, which is probably eye muscle spasm. Eye muscle spasm mainly refers to the muscles around the eyes, which twitch and jump involuntarily for some reason, which is what we commonly call eyelid twitching. There are many reasons that can cause eye muscle spasms, such as fatigue, lack of sleep, and increased stress. However, because the cause is not yet clear, eye muscle spasm can only be relieved.

Ophthalmospasm is a functional facial paralysis disease of the nervous system characterized by involuntary blinking and eye closure, which causes spontaneous spasm and contraction of the eye, orbital and periorbital orbicularis oculi muscles due to increased neuromuscular excitability caused by various reasons. In the past, some doctors believed that eye muscle spasms might be caused by mental factors. Through observation, it was found that long-term mental stress can trigger or aggravate eye muscle spasms and be accompanied by neurological diseases. Modern medical research believes that eye muscle spasm is a functional disease, but its exact pathogenesis has not yet been clarified.

Eye muscle spasms are often caused by lack of sleep, excessive use of the eyes, and fatigue. They often occur on one side and are more common in women than in men. They last for one day or several days. You can close your eyes and rest, and do eye exercises to relieve the spasms of the muscles around the eyes. Mild cases can heal without treatment and have no impact on your life and work. Although it will affect your mood to a certain extent, patients with moderate to severe cases need to receive appropriate treatment. Severe pathological eye muscle spasm often occurs in elderly people with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. It can develop from facial paralysis syndrome, last for a long time and involve large blinking amplitude. It is a neurological abnormality caused by sclerosis and twisting of brainstem blood vessels compressing the facial nerve. The muscles contract continuously and can last for months or even years. It is difficult to heal on its own and may be accompanied by facial muscle spasms. What's worse, "functional blindness" may be caused by spasm of one side of the face.

Because the cause of the disease is not yet clear, it is difficult to cure. Currently, oral neurotrophic agents, muscle relaxants, etc. are used, but the efficacy is uncertain. Severe facial muscle spasms can be treated surgically, including partial or complete orbicularis oculi muscle resection and facial nerve resection, but the sequelae are more obvious. Currently, the treatment methods used are to control symptoms, alleviate visual impairment and improve the quality of life.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that this disease "is a disease of Qi, which is a problem of the liver and spleen meridians being pulled and vibrated. People call it wind, but they don't know that blood deficiency and Qi stagnation are not pure wind." It is roughly divided into three types: blood deficiency causing wind, internal liver wind and deficiency of both heart and spleen. Physicians can make a diagnosis and treatment based on individual differences of patients, flexibly use Chinese medicine combinations, and combine acupuncture to act on local eye muscles. The bilateral Zhaohai, Shenmai, Houxi, Fengchi, Hegu, Taiyang, Zanzhu, Yuyao, Sibai and other acupoints can be used to play the role of dredging meridians and activating collaterals to increase the efficacy. Therefore, in the treatment of eye muscle spasm, traditional Chinese medicine has great advantages and its curative effect is quite significant.
