What will happen if the drip is too fast

What will happen if the drip is too fast

The speed of infusion is determined according to the patient's age, illness, and physical condition. Many people often have the phenomenon of too fast infusion speed at this time due to time constraints. However, if the infusion speed is too fast, they will feel very flustered and uneasy, and feel particularly uncomfortable. Therefore, you must pay attention to the amount during the infusion. It should not be too large. You must follow the doctor's instructions. This will be more helpful to the effect of the infusion.

The infusion speed should be determined based on many factors such as the patient's age, condition, total infusion volume, purpose of infusion and properties of the drug. It is a "hard rule" and cannot be adjusted at will.

General requirements: The infusion rate for adults should be 40 to 60 drops per minute, while the rate for children and the elderly should not exceed 20 to 40 drops per minute. For patients with heart (especially heart failure) or lung disease, the infusion rate should be slower to avoid acute heart failure or pulmonary edema due to increased cardiac workload.

In addition, different drugs also have requirements for infusion speed. For example, the infusion speed of vancomycin, clindamycin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin, lomefloxacin and other quinolone drugs among the antibiotics cannot be too fast. If potassium is administered too quickly during supplementation, it may cause cardiac arrest and be life-threatening.

Therefore, the speed of intravenous infusion needs to be adjusted by professional medical staff, and patients and their families must not adjust it at will to avoid serious consequences.

Over-infusion

Eight bottles per person

"Take medicine instead of injections, and inject instead of infusions" is the World Health Organization's medication principle, but this principle has long been subverted in China. Driven by the interests of all parties, China has become the world's leading "infusion power".

As early as 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning that children under the age of two should not use anti-cold medicines in principle. As for treating colds through intravenous drips, it is even more unimaginable in the United States.

The problem of excessive infusion has aroused strong concern among the Chinese people because Zhu Zhixin, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, revealed several figures at the 18th meeting of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress a few years ago: in 2009, 10.4 billion bottles of medical infusion were used in my country, which is equivalent to 8 bottles of infusion per person in the 1.3 billion population, far higher than the international level of 2.5 to 3.3 bottles.

Causes

Although China's infusion products are large in quantity, the export proportion is extremely low, and the vast majority are used on domestic patients. According to Gu Weijun, in 1998 the China Chemical Pharmaceuticals Association counted 1.9 billion bottles of infusion produced, plus the 400 to 500 million bottles of infusion produced by hospitals, for a total of no more than 2.4 billion bottles, or less than two bottles per person on average.

then

The company's goal is to expand production and lower prices in order to catch up with the foreign average (2 to 3 bottles) and meet the needs of domestic patients. As a result, the use of intravenous infusions in China has grown by leaps and bounds since then, with an average annual growth rate of nearly 20%. Infusions have become one of the five major preparations in the pharmaceutical industry, along with antibiotics, injections, tablets, etc.
