Why do my eyes hurt and I can’t open them because of tears?

Eyes are very important to the human body. If there is a problem with the eyes, it will bring great inconvenience to life. Eye pain and tears are not unfamiliar to many people. This may be caused by eye diseases, and dacryocystitis is a relatively common disease. Dacryocystitis can easily cause eye pain, frequent tears, etc., and it can also easily cause redness and swelling of the eyeballs, which requires timely treatment.

Introduction

The eye is an extremely fragile organ. Ophthalmic diseases require more efforts to treat due to the delicate and complex structure of the eye. Sudden eye pain, tears and inability to open the eyes may also be a precursor to many diseases, so we need to be vigilant.

The importance of eyes

Everyone can appreciate the importance of eyes, which are the important organ that provides the source of vision among our five senses. If we lose our vision, it is like we have lost 80% of the wonderfulness of this world. There are many beautiful things that we cannot witness and experience deeply without being able to see them. Therefore, we must be alert to the sudden and subtle eye discomfort in our lives to prevent the occurrence of related diseases. We can also prevent them through some symptoms and check them as early as possible to nip the worst consequences in the bud.

Causes of tearing eyes

Many people experience sudden eye discomfort. The most common type is sudden stinging in the eyes, redness of the eyeballs, uncontrollable tears, and difficulty opening the eyes.

Without opening your eyes, this may be dacryocystitis.

Causes

The exact cause has not yet been determined. Dacryocystitis is often secondary to inflammation of adjacent tissues, such as the conjunctiva, nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, or some special infections such as tuberculosis or syphilis. For those that originate in the lacrimal duct system, the cause is unclear.

Clinical manifestations

1. Acute dacryocystitis

Generally, the skin in the lacrimal sac area at the root of the nose will appear red, swollen, hot, and painful, and even the face on the same side will swell, sometimes accompanied by enlargement and tenderness of the preauricular and submandibular lymph nodes, tears in the eyes, and purulent secretions from the lacrimal puncta. When the abscess is localized, it can break through the skin surface. Most patients usually have a history of chronic dacryocystitis.

2. Chronic dacryocystitis

It is often manifested as tearing. When squeezing the affected lacrimal sac area, a large amount of purulent or serous secretions can be seen gushing out from the lacrimal puncta, and the affected tear duct cannot be flushed smoothly.

examine

1. Routine blood test

In acute dacryocystitis, routine blood tests can clarify the extent and nature of the infection.

2. Bacterial culture and drug sensitivity test of lacrimal sac secretions

Clarify the nature of the infection and the type of pathogenic bacteria, and provide important reference for drug treatment.

3. Pathological examination

4. CT examination

When chronic dacryocystitis forms a cyst, it appears as a round or quasi-round cystic watery density shadow, and the density of the abscess is slightly higher than the density of water. Enhanced scans show varying degrees of ring enhancement.

5. Dacryocystography

After flushing the lacrimal duct and compressing the lacrimal sac, 1-2 ml of 20% iodized oil or 60% meglumine diatrizoate is injected through the lacrimal puncta, the residual contrast agent in the conjunctival sac is wiped off, and the anteroposterior and lateral images of the orbit are taken to observe the filling of the contrast agent.

What is dacryocystitis?

Dacryocystitis is one of the diseases that causes stinging and tearing in our eyes. According to the course of the disease, it can be acute or chronic, and the latter is more common. It is usually caused by highly virulent bacteria infecting our eyes, the most common of which are streptococci. Long-term suffering from trachoma, chronic rhinitis and other diseases may cause blockage of the nasolacrimal duct. You can go to the hospital for examination and receive conservative drug treatment or choose surgery depending on the situation.

How to treat dacryocystitis?

Generally, treatment requires first determining the extent of infection and the types of bacteria causing the infection, and conducting a routine blood test; then conducting drug sensitivity tests, pathological examinations, CT angiography, etc.; if the condition is very serious and cannot be treated conservatively, a surgical plan must be determined, with preoperative drug treatment and tear duct flushing. Depending on the patient's condition, tear duct intubation or other unblocking surgeries may be performed. In extremely serious cases, the doctor will recommend lacrimal sac removal. Of course, our condition is generally not too serious, and the technical means of these surgeries are already mature, so there is no need to worry too much before a diagnosis is made.
