What are the dangers of blood clots in the eyes?

Blood clots in the eyes are a common eye disease, usually caused by congestion of the conjunctiva. It can easily cause eye pain or eye discomfort and other symptoms, which can cause great harm to the health of the eyes. It can also easily cause tension and bleeding in the blood vessels of the eye. It needs to be treated in time and can be treated with medication. You can usually apply a hot towel to the eyes to relieve the pain.

Causes of blood clots in eyes

If red flakes appear on the surface of the white of the eye, it should be a subconjunctival hemorrhage. There are many factors that may cause this situation: violent coughing, excessive force that causes an instantaneous increase in intraocular pressure, inadvertent external force, etc., all of which may cause rupture and bleeding of small blood vessels in the conjunctiva. If it happens only occasionally and there is no eye pain or decreased vision, don't worry. It generally won't cause eye discomfort. The bleeding will gradually subside, but it usually takes about 2 weeks. You can apply a hot towel 2-3 times a day after 48 hours of bleeding to promote absorption of bleeding. Usually no special medication is needed.

Disease Type

There are two types of eye congestion: superficial and deep. The former is bright red and is called "conjunctival congestion"; the latter is dark red and is called "ciliary congestion". The condition that has both symptoms is called "mixed congestion". These different types of congestion are very meaningful during doctor's examination and diagnosis, and are also one of the important bases for judging the severity of eye disease, but it is difficult for ordinary laymen to distinguish them.

Some people believe that the redder the eyes, the more serious the condition. Some people don't care much if they are not jealous. Actually, it is not. For example, acute conjunctivitis has an acute onset and severe congestion, but it is not considered a serious illness. If there are no special circumstances, it generally will not cause major problems and is relatively easy to cure. However, for diseases such as chronic iridocyclitis, scleritis, and glaucoma, the symptoms of congestion are not very obvious, but they are serious eye diseases that cannot be ignored. Most internal eye diseases do not appear to be congested, but may lead to blindness. Therefore, do not judge the severity of eye disease based solely on the severity of red eyes or the presence or absence of bloodshot eyes.

Eye congestion occurs when the capillaries on the surface of the eye become red, swollen, and congested. It is often caused by insufficient oxygen supply to the cornea or other tissues on the surface of the eye. Eye strain and improper eating habits, especially when consuming large amounts of ethanol, can also cause this phenomenon.

Pathological etiology

Eye bleeding, in addition to trauma, other eye diseases can also cause eye bleeding, mainly the following:

(1) Acute conjunctivitis

Cause: It is a common epidemic eye disease caused by bacterial and viral infection and is highly contagious. Symptoms: Acute onset, both eyes affected simultaneously or successively, the affected eye has stinging, itching, foreign body sensation, severe cases have photophobia and burning sensation, vision is generally not affected.

Symptoms: Red and swollen eyelids, conjunctival congestion, and secretions that are mostly bacterial, mucous or purulent. When I woke up in the morning, my eyes were closed with secretions. The secretions of viral infections are mostly watery and may be accompanied by corneal lesions, enlargement and tenderness of the preauricular and submandibular lymph nodes.

Treatment mechanism: This disease is highly contagious and should be prevented and isolated. Towels and handkerchiefs should not be used by each other, and washbasins should be rinsed and disinfected after use. Keep the eyes clean. If there is a lot of secretion, rinse with clean water and apply antibiotics or antiviral drugs topically. If there are systemic symptoms such as fever and headache, internal medicine treatment should be combined.

(2) Acute iridocyclitis

Cause: The causes of iris and ciliary body diseases are very complex, and most of them are unknown. They may be related to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatism, tuberculosis, syphilis, viral infections, etc.

Symptoms: ciliary congestion or mixed congestion, deposits behind the cornea (abbreviated as KP), turbid aqueous humor, swollen iris, constricted or irregular pupil, slow light reflex, and posterior adhesion of part of the iris and lens; intraocular pressure is generally normal, but sometimes it may increase or decrease; decreased vision is accompanied by obvious photophobia, tearing, and pain, and the pain may radiate to the eyebrow arch, temporal region, and forehead.

Treatment mechanism: Actively find the cause of the disease and treat it. Use 1% atropine eye drops to dilate the pupil, hot compress, hormone eye drops or subconjunctival injection topically. Severe patients require systemic intravenous injection or oral hormones and anti-inflammatory drugs.
