Why do my ears buzz when I sleep?

If there is a buzzing sound in the ears, the feeling is very uncomfortable. Buzzing sounds in the ears are very common in clinical practice, and this condition may occur for many reasons. Buzzing in the ears may also be a disease. Some people also have buzzing in their ears when they sleep, which greatly affects their sleep. Therefore, such problems must be treated in a timely manner. So what is the reason for buzzing in the ears when sleeping?

1. tinnitus

If there is a buzzing sound in the ear, this situation is considered to be tinnitus. Tinnitus refers to the abnormal sound sensation produced by people without any external stimulation. For example, if you feel monotonous or mixed sounds such as cicadas, buzzing, hissing, etc. in your ears, there is actually no corresponding sound in the surrounding environment. In other words, tinnitus is just a subjective feeling. There are many causes of tinnitus, including ear diseases (inner ear, middle ear, outer ear) and vascular diseases. Excessive fatigue, lack of sleep, excessive tension, noise influence, etc. can also cause tinnitus. If long-term tinnitus is not treated thoroughly, it can lead to hearing loss, and in severe cases it can lead to deafness. Tinnitus can be brief or persistent. If the tinnitus is short-term and comes and goes, it is generally a physiological phenomenon and there is no need to be overly nervous. If the tinnitus is persistent, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as deafness, dizziness, and headache, you should be alert and seek medical attention as soon as possible.

2. Reasons

There are many causes of tinnitus, which can be generally divided into organic and functional. The substantial tinnitus is caused by lesions in the ear itself or in other parts of the body, such as otitis media, rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal tube obstruction, foreign bodies in the external auditory canal (such as cerumen, scalp wax), Eustachian tube obstruction caused by colds, etc.; the functional tinnitus is caused by neurological dysfunction, which is also neurological tinnitus. As mentioned above, tinnitus caused by different reasons has different treatment methods.

3. Treatment

Arrange a light diet, drink plenty of water and get enough rest, and the symptoms will be greatly alleviated in a few days. At the same time, avoid exposure to noise and use headphones less. In terms of diet, you should eat less spicy food and drink less alcohol. The diagnosis of the cause requires the help of a series of examinations, including routine examinations of the otolaryngology department, audiology examinations, tinnitus tests, etc. Sometimes even some necessary neurological and systemic disease examinations are required. Therefore, patients should go to a regular large hospital to see a professional doctor for diagnosis. Only by finding out the nature, characteristics, and possible lesion sites of tinnitus can a targeted treatment plan be determined.
