What are the causes of dry eye?

There are many reasons for dry eyes, depending on whether it is caused by the external environment or improper use of the eyes. Eye discomfort should be relieved and treated promptly, otherwise it may have a certain impact on vision. Understanding the causes can also help with prevention.

Causes of dry eyes

1. Insufficient tear secretion from the aqueous layer of the lacrimal gland is the most common cause of dry eyes. Congenital absence of tear glands, decreased tear gland function due to aging, or some autoimmune diseases that cause tear gland inflammation, trauma, infection, autonomic nervous system disorders, long-term use of certain eye drops or taking certain medications can all lead to insufficient tear secretion. Long-term contact lens wearers.

2. Taking some antihypertensive drugs and some tranquilizers will affect the production of tear film. For example, taking chlorpheniramine will have a harmful effect on the tear film. Taking propranolol and some current contraceptives can reduce tear production.

3. Due to contact lenses, allergic conjunctivitis, air pollution, ultraviolet rays and other reasons, the tears are reduced and the quality is reduced.

4. Insufficient secretion of the oil layer and impaired meibomian gland function due to eyelid diseases.

5. Excessive evaporation of tears and uneven distribution of tear film. Eyelid diseases can cause poor eyelid closure, reduced blinking, and prolonged stays in air-conditioned rooms or in windy, hot outdoor environments.

6. Due to physiological reasons such as advanced age, lack of sleep, and mental stress, the quality of tears decreases.

7. Dry eyes in young people are mostly caused by frequently engaging in work or activities that require concentration, which leads to a decrease in the number of blinks. For example, if you engage in computer operation, driving, reading or other fine work for a long time, the number of blinks will decrease.
