Are dentures harmful to the body?

Teeth play a very important role in our body and are used by us to chew food. However, in life, many people have long-term bad living habits and careless diet, which easily lead to dental problems. Sometimes they have to install dentures to maintain normal chewing ability. However, many people think that dentures have no vitality and will not cause any effect on the body. In fact, dentures also have certain side effects. Let's take a look at whether dentures are harmful to the body.

Are dentures harmful to the body?

Many people wear dentures for more than ten years. Even if they are uncomfortable, loose or partially broken, they do not replace them. This is very harmful to oral health. Chen Shizhang explained that a considerable part of removable dentures are made of plastic, which is not wear-resistant, and their metal frames may also be deformed if used for too long. The lifespan of full dentures is about 5 to 7 years, while the lifespan of removable partial dentures is about 3 to 5 years.

Making dentures is not a one-time thing, and you need to pay more attention to them in your daily life after the restoration. Chen Shizhang said that when patients eat with dentures, they sometimes have to increase their biting force, which may cause excessive friction between the dentures and the gingival mucosa, easily leading to traumatic ulcers; if the dentures have burrs or are not smooth, they will irritate the mucosa for a long time and may even cause cancer. Even if dentures are well maintained and have not deformed at all, it does not mean that they can be used continuously because the oral environment is also changing. As the alveolar bone is progressively absorbed, the fit between the denture and the oral mucosa will decrease, making the chewing effect worse, and the denture may even fall off when the mouth is opened.

Chen Shizhang emphasized that elderly people who wear removable dentures should pay attention to eating less hard and sticky food; if looseness, tenderness, mucosal ulcers, etc. occur, they should see a doctor for adjustment in time; it is best to have a check-up every six months to a year; dentures also have a lifespan, even if they are well protected, they should be considered for replacement after about five years.

The above is an introduction to whether dentures are harmful to the body. After understanding it, we know that dentures do have certain hazards. They can easily damage our periodontal tissues and cause periodontitis. In addition, we must pay attention to ensuring good oral hygiene in our daily lives. If wearing dentures causes oral problems, we should go to the hospital for examination and treatment, and do not use medication blindly.
