Mild cognitive impairment

Mild cognitive impairment

Of course, when you get old, your memory function will also decline. This is why most elderly people experience memory loss and senile dementia. Senile dementia is also known as Alzheimer's syndrome. In the early stages of this disease, if you take medicine to control it, it can slow down the development of the disease, but if it is not controlled, it will become more and more serious. So what is mild cognitive impairment?

Mild cognitive impairment is an intermediate state between normal aging and dementia and is a syndrome of cognitive impairment.

Mild cognitive impairment is an intermediate state between normal aging and dementia and is a syndrome of cognitive impairment. Compared with normal elderly people matched in age and education level, patients have mild cognitive impairment, but their daily abilities are not significantly affected. The core symptom of mild cognitive impairment is the decline of cognitive function. Depending on the cause or the location of brain damage, it may affect one or more of memory, executive function, language, application, visual-spatial structural skills, etc., leading to corresponding clinical symptoms. Its cognitive decline must meet the following two points:

(1) Decline in cognitive function:

① Complaint or informed report of cognitive impairment, and objective evidence of cognitive impairment; or/and

② Objective examinations confirm that cognitive function is worse than before.

(2) Basic daily abilities are normal, but complex instrumental daily abilities may be slightly impaired.

Mild cognitive impairment symptoms can be divided into two categories based on the cognitive domain of impairment:

(1) Amnestic mild cognitive impairment

The patient presented with memory impairment. According to the number of cognitive domains affected, it can be divided into simple memory impairment type (only memory is affected) and multiple cognitive domain impairment type (in addition to memory involvement, one or more other cognitive domains are also damaged). The former is often the early cause of Alzheimer's disease, and the latter can be caused by Alzheimer's disease, cerebrovascular disease or other diseases (such as depression).

(2) Non-amnestic mild cognitive impairment

The patients showed impairment in cognitive domains other than memory function, but memory function was preserved. It can also be further divided into non-memory single cognitive domain damage type and non-memory multiple cognitive domain damage type, which are often caused by early lesions such as frontotemporal lobar degeneration and Lewy body dementia.
