How to preserve green tea

How to preserve green tea

Nowadays, many people like to meet up with three or two friends in the afternoon to drink tea, cultivate their sentiments and pay attention to health preservation. However, many people do not know how to store tea after opening the bag or box. This can easily cause the tea to deteriorate. Therefore, it is natural for everyone to understand how to store green tea. So, how to preserve green tea?

Green tea packaging is generally divided into five types: vacuum packaging, aseptic packaging, gas packaging, deoxygenated packaging and ordinary packaging. If the packaged green tea is not opened and stored in a cool and dry place, it can be kept for 6 to 12 months without any adverse changes such as deterioration or change of taste.

If the green tea leaves have been unpacked, the following methods can be used to preserve them:

1. When storing green tea leaves, try to fill the teapot as full as possible without leaving any empty space, which can reduce the air in the storage space and help maintain the quality of the tea leaves.

2. It is best to buy tea in small quantities or store it in small packages to reduce the number of times the packages are opened and prevent repeated contact with air. This way, the quality can be preserved and it is convenient to brew again.

3. Tea can be stored in a drying oven or in ceramic jars. Place a double layer of tissue paper at the bottom of the jar, place two layers of cotton cloth at the mouth of the jar and then close the lid.

4. Green tea can be stored in jars with double-layer lids - paper jars are better, but tin cans, tinplate cans, etc. are also acceptable. You still need to put a layer of tissue paper or kraft paper in the jar before tightening the lid.

5. It is best to prepare a small refrigerator specifically for storing green tea leaves, set the temperature below -5℃, tightly seal the unsealed package, and put it in the refrigerator. Otherwise, you can store the tea leaves in the freezer of a regular refrigerator, but you cannot store anything else in it.

6. You can use a clean thermos bottle, pour the unsealed tea leaves into the bottle, plug it tightly and store it.

Five taboos for storing green tea:

First, avoid moisture: Green tea leaves are a loose, porous, hydrophilic substance and therefore have strong moisture absorption and moisture return properties. When storing green tea, a relative humidity of 60% is more suitable. If it exceeds 70%, it will absorb moisture and cause mold, which will lead to acidification and deterioration.

Second, avoid high temperature: the best storage temperature for green tea is 0-5℃. If the temperature is too high, the amino acids, sugars, vitamins and aromatic substances in the tea will be decomposed and destroyed, which will reduce the quality, aroma and taste.

Third, avoid sunlight: sunlight will promote the oxidation of green tea pigments and ester substances, and can decompose chlorophyll into pheophytin. When green tea leaves are stored in glass containers or transparent plastic bags and exposed to sunlight, the substances inside will react chemically and deteriorate the quality of the green tea leaves.

Fourth, avoid oxygen: the chlorophyll, aldehydes, esters, vitamin C and other substances in green tea leaves are easily combined with oxygen in the air. The oxidized green tea leaves will make the color of the green tea soup red and darker, greatly reducing its nutritional value.

Fifth, avoid strange smells: Green tea leaves contain high-molecular palmitase and terpene compounds. This type of substance is extremely unstable in nature and can absorb a wide range of odors. Therefore, when tea is stored together with items with peculiar smell, it will absorb the peculiar smell and it will be difficult to remove it.

Regarding how to preserve green tea, after reading the above content, you should no longer say that you don’t know how to preserve green tea. In fact, as long as you follow the correct storage method, you will have good tea to taste even after a period of time. At the same time, the most important thing is to pay attention to not getting it damp or putting it together with things with peculiar smells, otherwise the flavor of the tea itself will be destroyed and the taste will be very different.
