What is that protruding bone at the back of the head?

A protruding back of the head is also called rebellious. Many people believe that it is a symbol of intelligence, while others believe that it means one is born rebellious. In fact, it has nothing to do with these. A protruding bone at the back of the head is a common phenomenon. Most patients are born with this condition, but many of us don’t know what it is. So what is the protruding bone at the back of the head? Let’s take a look!

There are two types of anti-bone. One is material, which refers to the occipital bone, also known as the posterior mountain bone. The protruding part above is called the "brain scoop". It is part of the skull. In short, it is the part where the head touches the pillow when a person lies flat, so it is called the occipital bone. The back of the head as the saying goes. The occipital bone is located behind the parietal bones and extends to the base of the skull. There is a large hole in the lower center of the occipital bone, called the foramen magnum, where the brain and spinal cord connect. With the foramen magnum as the center, the occipital bone can be divided into four parts: the squamous part at the back, the base at the front, and the lateral parts on both sides. The occipital bone is connected to the parietal bone, temporal bone, and sphenoid bone.

The inner surface of the occipital bone: There is a slope from the foramen magnum to the front and upward. There is the hypoglossal canal on the anterior and lateral side of the foramen magnum. The two ends of the canal are open, called the internal opening and external opening of the hypoglossal canal respectively. Behind the foramen magnum, the internal occipital ridge extends posteriorly and superiorly to the internal occipital protuberance, with a sagittal groove above it and transverse grooves on both sides. There is a jugular notch on the anterior and lateral edge of the occipital bone, which together with the jugular fossa on the temporal bone forms the jugular foramen.

Outside of the occipital bone: There are oval raised articular surfaces on both sides of the foramen magnum, called occipital condyles, which form the atlanto-occipital joint with the superior articular fossa of the atlas. There is a raised pharyngeal tubercle in front of the foramen magnum, and behind the foramen magnum there is the external occipital ridge extending to the external occipital protuberance. There are superior nuchal lines on both sides of the protuberance, and below it there is a parallel inferior nuchal line.
