Why do adults drool

Why do adults drool

I believe that everyone must have experienced drooling for no apparent reason. This is undoubtedly a very embarrassing thing. Usually, colleagues will make fun of us if they see it. But while feeling embarrassed, we should also think carefully about why we drool as adults? Is this an unconscious behavior or a disease? Let’s take a look together below.

Drooling can be a physiological phenomenon or a pathological manifestation. Most of the drooling in adults while awake is caused by pathological reasons.

1 If you suffer from oral diseases such as stomatitis, or if your dentures are ill-fitting and cause irritation, you will drool. 2 Poisoning or irritation by drugs such as mercury, lead, iodine, nicotine, as well as nervous system diseases such as encephalitis, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and endocrine system diseases such as diabetes are all possible factors.

3 A small number of pregnant women also drool. If esophageal stenosis or tumors, scars, etc. cause obstruction of the passage, swallowing nerve paralysis may occur after surgery in the mouth, throat, etc.

4 Dysfunction of the facial nerve, glossopharyngeal nerve and mandibular movement may make it difficult to swallow saliva smoothly and cause it to flow out.

5. Poor oral hygiene: The temperature and humidity in the mouth are most suitable for the reproduction of bacteria. The accumulation of food residues or sugar substances in the gaps between teeth and on the tooth surfaces can easily lead to caries and periodontal disease. These adverse factors are stimulating and can cause drooling while sleeping.

6. Malformation of front teeth: This may be due to genetic factors and acquired bad habits, such as biting nails, sticking out tongue, biting pencil heads, etc., which cause deformity of front teeth and drooling while sleeping.

7 Neuroregulatory disorders: The regulation of saliva secretion is completely neuroreflexive. The so-called "looking at the plum to quench thirst" is an example of conditioned reflex saliva secretion in daily life. Therefore, disorders in neural regulation may also cause drooling while sleeping.

Experts remind that children do not drool for no reason. Drooling can be a physiological phenomenon before teeth eruption. Because the teeth that are about to erupt stimulate the sensory nerves of the gums, and the child cannot swallow the saliva in the mouth, saliva often flows out naturally. At the same time, drooling is also the main symptom of oral inflammation in children. Children with drooling often also have upper respiratory tract symptoms such as fever, runny nose, and cough. Herpetic pharyngitis is particularly common in children. Small blisters first appear on the lips and throat, with redness around the edges. The blisters then rupture, forming multiple ulcers. The pain is so severe that the child may drool, refuse to eat, and cry.

So we must maintain normal eating habits. Don't go to bed immediately after a meal. Don't eat too much or eat greasy, sticky or other indigestible foods before going to bed. Rinse your mouth and brush your teeth after meals. Don't do strenuous activities or overuse your brain before going to bed to avoid drooling.

From above we know some reasons about why adults drool. If you drool occasionally, it is most likely caused by a disruption in your life rhythm or endocrine disorder. But if you drool frequently, you should take it seriously. You may have a disease. It is recommended that you go to a regular hospital for a comprehensive examination.
