The dangers of high magnesium levels

The dangers of high magnesium levels

Magnesium is an essential trace element for the human body. It has many functions for the human body. It can help the body maintain muscle and nerve activity; it can also help the body prevent kidney stones, gallstones, fight cancer, lower blood sugar, etc. Some people may have high magnesium levels, which can have adverse effects on the human body, such as decreased kidney function, high blood pressure, etc. The following is a detailed introduction to the hazards of high magnesium levels.

Magnesium is an important component of more than 300 enzymes in the human body. Magnesium helps maintain nerve and muscle activity and is another component of human bones. Magnesium is involved in the activities of energy required by the body, preventing calcium from precipitating in tissues and blood vessel walls, and preventing the formation of kidney stones and gallstones.

The effects of magnesium: 1. Anti-cancer 2. Sedative effect 3. Lowering blood pressure 4. Lowering cholesterol 5. Lowering blood sugar 6. Women who are magnesium deficient are more likely to give birth to deformed children. If any of your friends feel very tired, irritable, and easily angered, it is a sign of magnesium deficiency. Many women have neurotic hypertension (i.e. high blood pressure when they are nervous) and need to supplement calcium and magnesium. People who drink frequently and women taking birth control pills need to supplement calcium and magnesium.

There is no harm, and there are still many benefits.

It’s just that the alloy contains aluminum, which can easily lead to chronic aluminum poisoning. It is the result of aluminum accumulation in the human body.

1. Symptomatic treatment

1.1. Use of calcium ions: Since calcium has an antagonistic effect on magnesium, intravenous injection of 10% calcium gluconate or 10% calcium chloride can often relieve symptoms. The usual dosage is 10-20 ml of the former and 5-10 ml of the latter, injected slowly.

1.2. General symptomatic treatment: Respiratory support therapy, pressor therapy, antiarrhythmic therapy, etc. can be used as needed.

1.3. Cholesterase inhibitors: Hypermagnesemia can reduce the release of acetylcholine from nerve endings. The use of cholesterase inhibitors can reduce the destruction of acetylcholine, thereby alleviating the decrease in excitability of the neuromuscular junction caused by hypermagnesemia. Drugs that can be tried include neostigmine, etc.

2. Reduce blood magnesium concentration

2.1. Increase urinary magnesium excretion: Patients with normal renal function can appropriately supplement with normal saline or glucose solution to correct dehydration, increase glomerular filtration, and accelerate magnesium excretion. On the basis of replenishing blood volume, the use of diuretics can increase urinary magnesium excretion. Thiazide diuretics and loop diuretics can be used together. However, for patients with obvious renal insufficiency, the use of diuretics is sometimes ineffective.

2.2. Hemodialysis: Hypermagnesemia occurring in renal insufficiency is an indication for dialysis therapy, because hypermagnesemia and hypercalcemia often coexist in renal insufficiency, and calcium treatment is inappropriate at this time. But be careful to use magnesium-free fluid during dialysis.

2.3. Strictly control magnesium intake: All magnesium-containing drugs must be discontinued.

3. Prognosis

If hypermagnesemia is not diagnosed and treated in time, acute or chronic renal failure may occur. Attention should be paid to monitoring blood and urine magnesium concentrations.
