What should you pay attention to after surgery for benign pituitary tumors

Benign pituitary tumor is a brain tumor disease that can occur at any age. Because pituitary tumors can compress surrounding nerves and tissues, they can easily cause adverse reactions such as headaches and vision loss. In order to reduce the harm of pituitary tumors to the body, patients need to go to the hospital for surgical removal as soon as possible. What precautions should be followed after surgery?

1. Keep the intubation tube

Since the nasopharynx is prone to bleeding after pituitary tumor surgery, the tube needs to be kept in place for about 3 hours. The specific time for extubation varies from person to person, and the tube cannot be extubated before the patient is fully awake, otherwise coughing may occur due to accidental blood aspiration.

2. Pay attention to urine volume

Patients need to be cared for by a dedicated person after surgery and should pay attention to urine excretion. If patients develop diabetes insipidus due to brain tissue damage after surgery, they need to replenish body water in time, and can receive intravenous infusion of nutrients or drink small amounts of water multiple times to avoid water and electrolyte disorders.

3. Pay attention to anti-epileptic

Postoperative epilepsy is a common complication, so we need to pay attention to observe whether there are epileptic reactions, such as mental attacks, body convulsions, etc. In order to prevent epileptic seizures, patients can cooperate with medical staff to use anti-epileptic drugs, mainly including carbamazepine, phenobarbital, etc.

4. Pay attention to your eyesight

Clinically, many patients experience decreased or poor vision after surgery for benign pituitary tumors and need to cooperate with medical staff to undergo head CT scans. If intracranial hemorrhage causes changes in vision, hemostatic drugs should be taken in time, otherwise death will occur due to increased intracranial pressure.

With the increase of life pressure and changes in the environment, more and more patients suffer from benign pituitary tumors. If the patient needs surgery, daily care should be done after the operation. In addition to paying attention to changes in urine volume and actively preventing epileptic reactions, patients also need to do a good job of psychological care and hygiene, which is conducive to relieving tension and promoting the recovery of body functions.
