How are ovarian tumors classified?

Ovarian tumors refer to tumors that occur in the ovaries. They are a common tumor of the female reproductive organs and can occur at any age. At the same time, ovarian malignant tumors are also one of the three most common gynecological tumors. Ovarian tumors can be divided into epithelial tumors, germ cell tumors, sex cord stromal tumors, and metastatic tumors.

1. Epithelial cell tumor:

Approximately 50% to 70% of tumors arise from epithelial cells and can be divided into serous, mucinous, endometrioid, clear cell, transitional cell, and seromucous tumors.

2. Germ cell tumors:

A group of tumors derived from germ cells accounts for 20% to 40% and can be divided into teratomas, dysgerminomas, yolk sac tumors, embryonal carcinomas, non-gestational choriocarcinomas, mixed germ cell tumors, etc.

3. Sex cord-stromal tumors:

Sex cords and mesenchymal tissues come from primitive gonads, accounting for 5% to 8%. They can be divided into pure stromal tumors, pure sex cord tumors, and mixed sex cord-stromal tumors.

4. Metastatic tumors:

A tumor formed by the metastasis of primary cancers from the gastrointestinal tract, reproductive tract, breast, etc. to the ovaries.

Since the early symptoms of ovarian tumors are not obvious, they are often discovered accidentally during female physical examinations. When women come into contact with abdominal lumps, especially relatives with a history of ovarian tumors, they should also seek medical attention in time and strengthen physical examinations to clarify the diagnosis and avoid delaying the disease.
