How to tell if figs are ripe

How to tell if figs are ripe

Fig is a fruit that everyone likes and is familiar with. But the strange thing about figs is that it is difficult to tell whether they are raw or ripe. Because some figs look raw, but they are actually ripe. Therefore, when buying figs, many people will make wrong judgments, which affects people's desire to buy. Therefore, it is necessary to know how to judge whether figs are ripe.

Maturity time

The climate in the south is more suitable for the growth of figs, so many people grow it in the south, and the yield of figs in the south is also very high. The ripening period of figs in the south is generally from July to September.

Figs in the north mature a little later than in the south because of differences in geography, sunlight, and climate. Figs in the north usually mature between October and November each year.

Hardness

To distinguish it, we can pinch it first. If it is very hard, we can basically conclude that it is not ripe yet. If the fig is ripe, it will be very soft when pinched and will look fuller in appearance.

Taste

Although unripe figs are red when broken open, they taste very sour and are not suitable for consumption. This type of fruit is only 70% ripe and is considered a raw fruit. Ripe figs taste sweet and a little crisp, and no white juice will ooze out of the broken part. The flesh has the luster of honey but does not feel fluid. It will become very soft after being left for a while.

Nutritional Value of Figs

Figs are rich in amino acids, 18 of which have been discovered so far. Not only does it have a high utilization value because it contains all eight essential amino acids for the human body, but it also has the highest content of aspartic acid (1.9% dry weight), which is very effective in fighting leukemia, restoring physical strength and eliminating fatigue. Therefore, a fig drink is used as a "coffee substitute" abroad.

According to the data, every 100 grams of figs contains 81.3 grams of water, 1.5 grams of protein, 0.1 grams of fat, 3 grams of crude fiber, 13 grams of carbohydrates, 1.1 grams of ash, 30 micrograms of carotene, 0.03 milligrams of thiamine, 0.02 milligrams of riboflavin, 0.1 milligrams of niacin, 2 milligrams of ascorbic acid, 1.82 milligrams of vitamin E, 212 milligrams of potassium, 5.5 milligrams of sodium, 67 milligrams of calcium, 17 milligrams of magnesium, 0.1 milligrams of iron, 0.17 milligrams of manganese, 1.42 milligrams of zinc, 0.01 milligrams of copper, 18 milligrams of phosphorus, and 0.67 micrograms of selenium. In addition, it also contains citric acid, fumaric acid, succinic acid, malic acid, propionic acid, oxalic acid, quinic acid, lipase, protease and various amino acids essential to the human body.
